David De Gea insists that Manchester United must challenge for the title next season. He says teammates must step up and not just leave it to Jose Mourinho.

United sit in 2nd place in the league and are in the FA Cup final. Mourinho has seen his team reach three finals in two seasons. If the Red Devils win the final against Chelsea, it would be their 3rd major trophy since Mourinho took over.

However, after failing to mount a serious title challenge this season, De Gea believes that the team can do better. The Reds have recorded a win against every team in the Top 6 this season. Their problem has been putting away the lower table sides.

A defeat versus Huddersfield early in the season gave Manchester City the upper hand, and the recent loss against West Brom gifted City the title. Their inability to be consistent throughout the season prevented them from doing so.

One player has come out expressing what it will take for him and his teammates to come out as victors next season. The keeper says that the team must take responsibility next season, if they are to challenge for the league. He also insists it’s down to the players to do the business on the pitch, and the manager to help improve the team.

De Gea said in an interview with the Premier League, via ESPN.

"“We’ve got a great manager.“He’s very experienced, he’s won everything there is to win in the game.“What he is really good at is transmitting his winning mentality to the group.“However, at the end of the day, it’s down to ourselves, the players on the field.“It is us who make the saves, create the chances and score the goals. “So, as a group, we’ve got to get that level of consistency and quality throughout the season.“"

United’s Season

Failure to win the League Cup, Champions League and Premier League has led to criticism of this United team. Their season hangs on their FA Cup Final next month. If Mourinho’s men win a trophy this season, it will be seen as a minor success. However, if they fail to win, more questions will be asked about the team and the manager.

United will hope that their transfer activity in the summer would be fruitful enough to win the 2018/19 Premier League trophy.
