Recent performances by Chelsea FC have raised the blood levels of all Chelsea fans, and not in a good way. Their latest league loss against Crystal Palace, which ended with the away team winning 2-1 through an impressive performance by Bakary Sako, proved that the Stamford Bridge residents have a problem.
Chelsea FC has been far from impressive since their league-winning season before the summer. Their underwhelming performance in pre-season friendlies should have alarmed the club officials. The team has only won one match in nine games through regular time. They have conceded nine goals in four league matches. The club needs help.
Captain John Terry handed his armband to Branislav Ivanovic for the last match against Crystal Palace due to his suspension. The vice captain’s performances were below par to say the least. The visitors took advantage of Chelsea FC’s vulnerable right wing, which is where Branislav Ivanovic is defending. Because of the Serbian’s frequent run-ups in the attack, the opponents can easily counter-attack with one less defender to worry about.
Kurt Zouma stepped in for John Terry in central defense alongside Gary Cahill. The pair performed as usual with no glaring mistakes. However, a team’s back four must work in harmony to complete a successful defensive combination. Chelsea FC clearly has a gaping hole in their defense. The Blues’ pursuit of John Stones seems to have hit a dead end. However, reports suggest that Jose Mourinho is looking elsewhere for defensive reinforcements. Will these transfers cure their ailments?

With the acquisition of Pedro Rodriguez from Barcelona, Chelsea FC is rich in attacking options. For now, the new signing is matched with Eden Hazard and Willian as the attacking trident of Jose Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 formation. With Oscar and Ramires out injured, the manager has less of a “selection headache” in his decisions.
The talented Kenedy made his official debut as a substitute against Crystal Palace. However, Jose Mourinho deployed him at left-back to replace Cesar Azpilicueta. Nevertheless, the young Brazilian showed what he was capable of after dribbling his way past defenders.
Other than their flawed defense, their holding midfielders are also underperforming. Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas were tasked to deliver the ball forward for their attacking teammates to do their magic. Neither of them are doing a good job of keeping possession of the ball, let alone distributing it. Jose Mourinho substituted Nemanja Matic out for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a questionable gesture at such a crucial point in the game.
On the bright side, Chelsea FC fans can take joy in the fact that Radamel Falcao has scored his debut goal for his new club. It has been a long-time dream of the Blues and Jose Mourinho to have the Colombian striker play for their team. Fans would be hoping that this would be one of many from the predatory striker.
