Liverpool vs Tottenham. As one English star begins to fade into the background, a new one is born. This matchup pits the experienced Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard against the up-and-coming star that is Harry Kane.

Liverpool comes into the match following a very boring 0-0 draw against their Merseyside rival’s Everton. The draw however did extend Liverpool’s unbeaten run to eight games. Before the Everton result, the Reds had been on a three-match winning streak, a streak that Brendan Rodgers men will be looking to restart.

The Reds will also look to continue their home form. They have only lost two matches at Anfield this season and are unbeaten at home since their November 8th loss to Chelsea.

On the other side, Tottenham head north to Anfield with all the momentum. Defeating their North London rival Arsenal in thrilling fashion should give Spurs the advantage in this match. Harry Kane has been in superb form as of late and will be looking to lead a dominant Spurs attack.

Since December 12th, Kane has averaged 1.1 goals scored per match across all competitions. That stat ranks him third in the world. As well as Kane, Tottenham posses other lethal attackers. Kane sits tied for fourth for Premier League goals while teammates Christian Eriksen and Nacer Chadli also sit in the top 20.

Key Stats

  • Liverpool have not lost in their last eight matches, and only once in their last twelve.
  • Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield in their last six games.
  • Tottenham have lost the last four matches against Liverpool.
  • Tottenham are on a three match winning streak.

Players to Watch

Liverpool will need a strong performance from their backline. Both defensively and off of corners and free-kicks, Martin Škrtel will need a supreme effort in this match to keep Liverpool in it. In a recent interview, Škrtel spoke of Liverpool’s lack of fear of Harry Kane.

"“We try to do our job and help the team. I said that many times; defending is not only about the defenders but the defending of the whole team. We have improved that. He is doing well, scoring goals and we have to look after him, but it is not only him, Tottenham are doing well as a team.”"

That same Harry Kane is also Tottenham’s player to watch. With twelve league goals to his name this season, Kane is a very dangerous attacker. Being scouted by Real Madrid will only serve to encourage his current form.

If Kane is able to breakdown the strong Liverpool backline, Tottenham will have no problem finding the back of the net in this match. The main thing that could prevent a victory for Spurs is their defense.

Tottenham gave up many good chances to Arsenal in their last match. Giving the same amount of chances to the Steven Gerrard-led Liverpool could be deadly for the squads Champions League dream.

However, should Tottenham cut down those chances and execute on the attack, Spurs will leave Anfield with the win, and continue the race to play Champions League football next season.

Liverpool – 0, Tottenham – 2
