Liverpool have started off the season incredibly well. Despite their strict summer transfer window budget and losing some of their key players, Jurgen Klopp has done well to steady the ship. In truth, they’ve been in form for some time now, as it was only a poor start to last season which cost them their place in the top four.

This season, the aim is very much to finish within the top four but for Klopp, this is the minimum. Ideally, he would like to reinstate his former title rivalry with Manchester City. However, given the downfall of the club last season, this season could be a stepping stone. Either way, the Reds would like to see improvement.

To do so, Liverpool must look at the January transfer window as a time to genuinely strengthen the squad. While it might seem like a long time away, the midpoint of the season will be the perfect time to assess where the Anfield Stadium side must strengthen if they are achieve their objectives this season. Certainly, they shouldn’t need to sign a midfielder.

Instead, Jurgen Klopp is already focusing on strengthening his defence. According to Sky Sports, the German manager could compete with Manchester City for the signing of Nayef Aguerd in the January transfer window.

The West Ham United defender is a colossal player and in truth, it’s a surprise he lasted the summer in London. Clubs were lining up to sign him even then, but he remains a Hammer at least for half of this season.

To partner Jurgen Klopp, Aguerd would be the ideal option. Certainly, Liverpool would have a lot of height and physicality with this strategy. Although, it’s just as likely that Aguerd could be used as a rotational player, particularly with the busy Europa League schedule.
