Chelsea FC: Filipe Luis Talks Up Stamford Bridge Impact

Chelsea FC defender Filipe Luis has praised the team’s home form so far this season. The Blues tied a club record of 12 consecutive wins at Stamford Bridge when they beat Newcastle United on Saturday.

Luis — who started on the bench — came on to replace the injured Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard was taken off in the 37th minute due to an apparent groin injury, but the club later announced that it did not look too serious.

Luis provided a major boost on the left side of the pitch by nullifying the impact of Remy Cabella. The forward got the better of Azpilicueta on a few occasions, but he could not shake the Brazilian off so easily.

Chelsea emerged 2-0 victors, with goals coming from Oscar and Diego Costa on either side of halftime. While it wasn’t a convincing win, the Blues did what they had to in the second half by constantly pressing their opponents. They have reopened a slender lead at the top of the Premier League table, thanks to Everton’s draw with Manchester City.

"“It is very difficult to play against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and we feel really comfortable, we know how to play on our pitch.”‘The team is doing great and we have to keep going and fighting to the end because everybody wants to beat us here. The Premier League is a difficult competition. We have to keep working.”"

Luis also stated that Chelsea were prepared to face a tough challenge from the visitors, and did not fall victim to complacency.

"“Newcastle are a team with tough players and they never change their game because they are playing home or away, so we knew it was going to be tough but we did a good job against their attacks in the first half and then with our goals, everything is more comfortable for us and we could control the game.”“When you are in front is the always easier but especially in the Premier League you can never sleep in the game because if you do, in one minute the opposition can score.”“The team defended well in the second half [against Newcastle] with a lot of concentration and in attack we have lethal players and they can improvise a lot so it is really difficult to stop them.”– Filipe LuisSource: Chelsea FC Official Website"

The defender will get more chances to impress, with Azpilicueta expected to miss at least two matches. Those next two games will be away to Swansea in the league, and Liverpool in the Capital One Cup semi-finals.

The Brazilian has had to play second fiddle to the preferred Azpilicueta this season, but he brings with him another dimension. He is quicker and more attack minded, he also seems to know his way around free kick territory.

After Liverpool, the Blues will remain at home for their next three matches; the FA Cup tie against either Bradford or Millwall, the second semi-final Leg versus Liverpool and the possible title-decider against Manchester City. Luis will be hoping that their splendid home form can continue.
