Premier League Player Of The Season: Harry Kane or Ruben Dias?
The season is over. It’s almost time for the end of the season awards. We have the Premier League player of the season, the manager of the season and the young player of the season nominees. They were released by the Premier League a few days ago.
There are, as expected, quite a few big names nominated for the Player Of The Season award, and there are a lot of players you could look at and think, “Hey, this guy deserves it so much!”
The nominees for the award are the following players:
Harry Kane (Tottenham), Ruben Dias (Manchester City), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) and Tomas Soucek (West Ham)
Who deserves the Premier League Player of the Season award most?
I think all of these players had fantastic individual seasons. But there are a couple, at least, that stood out. I’ll talk about which player I think will win, and which player I think should win.
For me, it’s going to be Ruben Dias and Harry Kane, respectively. They’ve both had incredible seasons for their respective clubs, and it truly seems like they’ve given it their all.
Ruben Dias, as we all know, has helped Manchester City so much in defensive stability. I’m not just talking about the Premier League, but also the Champions League. Manchester City got to the final, and although they ultimately came up short, the performances from Ruben Dias throughout were nothing short of extraordinary.

He showed that he’s one of the best center backs in the world (possibly even the best this season) – and that he doesn’t shy away on the big occasions – in those two games against PSG. He was everywhere in the defense. He was making clearances, blocking shots, making last-ditch tackles, literally putting his body on the line on multiple occasions.
He was hugely important for Manchester City, and the fact that they won the league and he won the FWA Player of the Year means that he might be slightly favored over other players, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for doing so. He deserves it.
The other option, of course, Harry Kane. To be honest, he’s my pick for the Player Of The Season award. Kane was absolutely fantastic individually this season, and if he wins the award, no one can really blame the Premier League for giving it out to the England national team captain.
The most important charts are the goals and the assists, right? Because at the end of the day, that’s what matters most on the offensive end. Well, Harry Kane topped BOTH of those charts.
He also had the most shots on target, the second-highest xG, the highest non-penalty xG. He was top ten in the shot-creating actions, and top two in the goal-creating actions. (All stats courtesy of FBref.com)
He was sensational, and it does seem like he gave Tottenham every last bit that he can, but them ending the season on 7th position in the league table after all that is very disappointing, and that’s why Kane wants a move away.
He’s at the peak of his powers, and it’s the best time to win some trophies, so why wouldn’t he want a move?
Tottenham’s position on the league table is also why Kane might not win the award. Kane had an excellent individual season as I said, and in my opinion, he deserves the award. But, the league would also take team performance into account, and that’s not very good.
So, yes, Ruben Dias will likely win the award, and I’m not taking anything away from the guy, Dias had an incredible season and will deserve the award if he wins it. But, I just think Harry Kane deserves it a little bit more. But hey, what do I know?
Either way, this Premier League season showed us some mind-blowing individual performances, and it was definitely worth sticking around for. All these eight players were great, and hopefully, next season is even better for them and others!
