Martin Odegaard has had a somewhat decent spell at Arsenal since he’s joined the club from Real Madrid on a loan transfer.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing throughout the season, but I think that all in all, he’s had an OK-ish season. He started off a bit slow, but then burst into the first XI and started performing really well. After that he slowly faded, as did the rest of the team.

Now, obviously, if you’re involved in a loan deal that doesn’t include a buy option, you’re technically supposed to go back to your parent club. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to return immediately, but you go back, technically.

Martin Odegaard, by the looks of it, will go back. But, the question is; should he return to Arsenal?

Should Odegaard really have a future at Arsenal right now?

When asked about this situation by SkyDE, Odegaard said that he’s happy at Arsenal, and it all depends on Real Madrid if they want to keep him around or let him stay at Arsenal.

.I really don’t think that selling him is even an option, given how patient Real Madrid have been with him, and how well he has played in his previous few loan spells at Vitesse and then Real Sociedad, and now in bits at Arsenal.

So it’s either he gets loaned out to Arsenal/any other top European club, or he goes back to Madrid, which would make a bit of sense.

He helps Real Madrid in so many ways, especially after Luka Modric passes the torch, because believe it or not: The Croatian does age.

But here’s the issue: Real Madrid didn’t play him all that much when he was at Madrid, and he didn’t really have many chances to shine at the club in his first season back. Modric was playing really well at the time, and that’s why he was loaned out.

No one really expected Modric to be this good, fit and consistent at age 35.

Soon after, he moved to Arsenal, got minutes under his belt, even played well for a bit. So why shouldn’t he stay?

More from Arsenal

Well, as I said, Modric isn’t getting any younger, and Arsenal aren’t really in the best state. They’re not in any European competition next season, they are a team with so many imperfections, so many missing pieces.

Many players are leaving, not many players are joining the club. Does Odegaard really have the right environment to be successful there?

Now, look at it this way: Had he stayed at Real for a little longer, he probably would’ve gotten his chance to impress the coach.

Real Madrid had so many injury problems this season, it’s hard to fathom. At one point they only had two first-team midfielders available, so I am sure that Odegaard would’ve had a chance to make a case for himself had he stayed.

I don’t blame him for not staying, but in hindsight, it would’ve been a better option for him.

All in all, I really don’t think Odegaard should continue at Arsenal. The club is simply not good enough at the moment, and even if he did give his best at the club, it may not be enough many times because of the imperfections that this club has.

If he chooses to go back to Real Madrid, he might get an opportunity at some point during the season, with Modric being as old as he is, and Real’s lack of depth in the middle of the park.
