Sergio Aguero and Manchester City announced this week that they would be parting ways at the end of the season.

With 181 goals in 271 appearances including that title-deciding winner at the Etihad in 2012, the Argentinian has established himself as a Premier League legend.

It’s been suggested in the past couple of days that Aguero could be heading back to Spain, with infamous football journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Barcelona have already opened talks.

What would Aguero bring to Barcelona?

More from Premier League

For a team that once boasted one of the deadliest front threes that football has ever seen, Barcelona’s current crop are about as meek as a team that features Lionel Messi can be.

Ousmane Dembele is miles away from the clinical inside forward that Barcelona craves, while Antoine Griezmann hasn’t shown the same form he did in his time in Madrid.

Ansu Fati has shown flashes of brilliance and certainly has a bright future ahead of him, but at 18, he is just is too young to shoulder too much expectation that Barca fans demand.

Since losing Luis Suarez, Barca have looked blunt in attack. This season Messi has a predictably impressive 28 goals, but Griezmann is second on just 10. Aguero’s goal record speaks for itself and would surely take some of the burden off of Messi.

What does this mean for Messi?

Lionel Messi’s Barcelona future is far from settled, but the Catalan club will do all they can to keep him at the Camp Nou. The opportunity to link-up with his compatriot at club level could be a key factor.

However, if Barcelona do sanction a move for Aguero he could actually end up replacing his national captain. Although Messi now looks unlikely to grace the Premier League, he could still be on the move to Paris Saint Germain.

PSG are also rumoured to be interested in Aguero, but it’s unlikely that even the extremely wealthy French champions would be able to afford them both in the same window.

Barcelona could look to offset the enormous impact of losing the best player in the world, by signing a proven goalscorer. After all, the last South American striker they signed from the Premier League did pretty well for them.
