The most surprising team from last season was Sheffield United. They managed to finish in 9th place despite it being their first season back in the Premier League.

It was a meteoric rise to the top half, and many expected Sheffield to continue progressing. But unlike Everton this season, they have been massively disappointing.

Sitting on 5 points and in last place, it looks as if the season may already be lost. But with much to play for, will Sheffield United survive relegation?

What went right for Sheffield United last season?

For the most part, Sheffield was not very adept at scoring last season. They were only able to score 39 goals which was the 3rd-least in the league. The main reason why they were able to find so much success was thanks to their solid defense.

By only letting in 39 goals, Sheffield had the 4rth-best defense in the league. With having such a strong defense Chris Wilder’s men were able to muster out close wins. This allowed them to pick up valuable points when their offense was unable to score.

What is going wrong for Sheffield United this season?

To put it lightly, Sheffield has regressed in every facet from last season. Their attack is still bad, only scoring 10 goals over 19 games.

The difference is their defense is also quite bad. The Blades’ defense isn’t the worst in the league but they’ve already managed to allow 32 goals through 19 games.

That’s only 7 less than they had allowed through a full season last year. So Sheffield has not been able to get points out of close games like they had in the past.

Will Sheffield United survive relegation?

The most important thing for Sheffield right now is to figure out how to score consistently. At this point, if the attack doesn’t improve they will have no shot to survive relegation.

Another important factor is how a good attack can take a lot of pressure off the defense. Sheffield has shown in the past that they can perform well defensively. Getting an early lead in the game will be vital for Sheffield as they will need to start stacking up wins.

If they can put a nice run together there is no reason why they can’t survive relegation. That being said, I don’t believe Sheffield United will survive relegation this season.
