As of Saturday, Arsenal and Mesut Ozil have found an agreement in principle to terminate his current deal with the club.

Mesut Ozil is a couple of steps away from finally ending his Arsenal career that has been in turmoil in recent years.

A seven and a half year Premier League career with mixed emotions at the Emirates comes to a rather sad ending.

As per David Ornstein from the Athletic, the club and player have found an agreement to cancel his contract with them with immediate effect.

With this, if everything goes off without any hiccups, his potential new home Fenerbahce expects him to finalise his deal before the end of the weekend.

"Arsenal and Mesut Ozil have reached an agreement in principle to terminate his contract. The 32-year-old is expected to travel this weekend to complete a move to Fenerbahce after a deal was agreed with the Turkish club."

The Arsenal-Ozil saga is finally over!

More from Arsenal

It is finally happening but it was only a matter of when and no longer if the German playmaker was going to leave the Emirates.

Following his omission from the first-team by Mikel Arteta and the club, in both the Premier League and Europa League this season, it was evident he was no longer part of the club’s future.

The Gunners have been working tirelessly for a while at alienating Ozil and made it ever so clear they were trying to get him off their wage bill. They basically wanted him gone last season already.

He was their highest earner before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract renewal (Aubameyang is earning £375,000-per-week now), netting £350,000-per-week and banking approximately £18,2million-a-year.

This was one of their biggest priorities for the past couple of windows. Cut the deadwood and bringing new faces for the Arteta era.

Finding new targets

The Gunners will certainly look to acquire the replacement playmaker they are in dire need of.

There are some more fringe players they are still trying to offload but have been struggling to strike deals with possible suitors.

The only players being linked have been Real Madrid’s Isco, missed target Olympique Lyonnais’ Houssem Aouar and RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer.

Emi Buendía from Norwich City was a surprising option on the manager’s list of targets but now a deal could be off if there was any. The Canaries are unwilling to sell this month according to recent reports.

The question by James McNicholas and David Ornstein is the perfect one;

"What does Edu do? What has he been responsible for thus far? And what are his plans for the future? (Via: The Atheltic)"

They are indeed right by suggesting this will be Arsenal’s technical director Edu’s most defining moment at the club.

Mesut Ozil will not be an easy act to follow especially with him second in the Premier League for fastest player to 50 assists, only behind Kevin de Bruyne. In 141 appearances he reached the feat of 50 assists.

They are in the final stages of terminating Ozil’s contract at the Emirates while naming the most eligible candidate to take on the job and fill the gaping hole in the creative department.

This one move could define their season whether they make top four or remain a mid-table team.
