Liverpool looking to the wrong transfer window to do business in
Liverpool will be attending to all their transfer needs in the summer and not anytime sooner. Jurgen Klopp has accepted the fact the club will not sign a centre-back this month.
Liverpool appears unphased with what is going on in the current campaign – where they have given up their lead more than once. What previously was a six-point lead at the top of the table has now turned into a second-place spot behind old rivals, Manchester United.
Despite all the drama when considering all the injury problems they have endured and having to go almost half of a campaign with one (two on the odd occasion) senior centre-back/s, they are still happy not to do any work during the January transfer window.
As the weeks wear on and we approach the second week of Jan – heading halfway through the month already Jurgen Klopp has given into the idea the club will not work on any frantic buys.
Another sticking point for the Reds is that they will struggle to convince new names to come to Anfield in fear of less game time due to stiff competition in every spot and already knowing exactly who the usuals are in the starting XI.
"I think that Jurgen Klopp has been so honest when he speaks about the market. Not all managers are honest about transfers, but Jurgen Klopp was honest. They are looking for opportunities. If something arrives, they will be ready to sign a new player but spending 60 or 70 million euros for players like (Dayot) Upamecano or this kind of centre-back is absolutely impossible in this window for Liverpool."

Everything is being prepared for a big summer spending. A centre-back signing, which is needed now more than ever, is one of the priority signings for Michael Edwards and Klopp.
Ben White and Dayot Upamecano are still the two prime suspects for the Reds but by the time summer comes there will undoubtedly be competition for the two aforementioned defenders. Real Madrid and Chelsea have already been named in the Upamecano race.
The other name that’s taken the front page of Liverpool’s most important summer targets is Renato Sanches from Lille, who is said to be the long-term replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum – that’s if the Dutchman decides to leave as he hits the last six months of his current Anfield deal.
A Gini exit becomes more and more realistic as the days, weeks and months go by. With each one that passes, more teams come knocking and one will have the sweetest deal for the midfielder.
The most far-fetched summer interest of the lot is the Kylian Mbappe transfer link. The Frenchman is reaching the final two years of his deal with Paris Saint-Germain. Again though, they face competition from the Spanish capital.
Not all hope is lost
Klopp has stated they will definitely make a move for a player but only if the price is right. Teams are aware the Merseysiders are in need of defenders and have increased their asking prices.
Much like the Sven Botman saga that blew up as quickly as it cooled down.
Fabrizio Romano on Sky Sports:
"If they will have a good opportunity, they will think about it in the next weeks. If not, I am sure Liverpool will stay with this squad. They will try to extend the contract of Virgil van Dijk. They are planning with him for the future so this year they will open negotiations to extend his contract and then next summer they will go for someone new. (Via: Sky Sports)"
