Premier League: Title Contenders Versus The Pretenders
The Premier League title race is on as Liverpool drop more points in their bid to retain their English glory. Who are serious contenders and are the pretenders?
Liverpool: Contender
Liverpool was probably considered the favorite to win the Premier League at the beginning of the season. As expected, they are at the top of the table right now.
However, with some injury struggles and maybe some discontent within the team, Liverpool doesn’t look as strong as we’re used to seeing, especially after collecting only two points from their last three league outings.
They maintain their lead after the first round of fixtures have been completed for 2021 but must improve their performances in order to widen the points gap. No matter what happens, I expect Liverpool to be amongst the teams with a legitimate shot to win it all.
Everton: Pretender
Everton has been one of the surprising teams this season. Currently in 7th place and level on points with 4th-placed Tottenham. They have found a level of consistency that they haven’t had in the past. But in the end, I don’t believe they will have quite enough to challenge for 1st place.
It will all come down to consistency with Everton. To this point, I feel Everton has been just a little bit lucky over the first half of the season. Over the second half, they should regress back to the norm.
Everton’s priority should be trying to finish in a Champion’s League place and then can push on next season with a real shot at the title.
Leicester City: Contender

Over the years Leicester has proven time and again that they are one of the top Premier League teams. Once again they are right in the mix at the top in 3rd place, only a point off from the leaders Liverpool.
With Jamie Vardy leading the attack, they can cope with any team in the Premier League. With a few added signings in January; Leicester can look to push for the top spot.
Manchester United: Contender
Manchester United is one of the most talented teams in the Premier League. Although they don’t always play up to the standards that they should. Quite frankly, United can compete with anyone.
For this reason, I believe United could actually finish in the top spot this year. The most important thing for them is to continue stacking wins while the others drop points against the so-called lesser teams.
With a Premier League as open as it is this season, a month-long winning streak could be the difference in the title race. Manchester United have the talent and pedigree to put it all together and win the league.
Tottenham: Pretender
Tottenham has one of the most dangerous attacks in the Premier League. They also have one of the best defensive-minded coaches in the world. But for some reason, they just seem to struggle to find any consistency in form.
In recent weeks they’ve lost to Liverpool and Leicester while tying with Crystal Palace and Wolves, returning to winning ways at the turn of the year against Leeds United. That sort of form doesn’t exactly inspire confidence going forward.
If Jose Mourinho can figure out the problem quickly enough, there is plenty of time for them to turn things around. But for now, I do not believe Tottenham will be a serious challenger this season.
Manchester City: Contender
It’s a little bit strange to see Manchester City in 5th place at this point in the season. Even stranger, it’s mostly because they haven’t been able to score at the rate they’re used to.
That has to change quickly for City to come out on top this season. I predict they will be able to do just that. There’s no reason to believe that City’s extremely talented attackers will struggle this mightily for the duration of the campaign.
Their 3-1 victory over Frank Lampard‘s Chelsea displayed the Man City of old. They were ruthless for 45 minutes of the match, which was all the time they required to collect another three points.
With a rejuvenated defense and a few tweaks in attack, City should be able to find themselves right near the top by season’s end.
Chelsea: Pretender
On paper Chelsea surely have one of the most impressive teams in the Premier League and could be named title favorites just by looking at the names in their squad. But when you bring in so many new faces at once there will be growing pains.
It looks like this season will be one of growth for Chelsea but with the amount of talent that they brought in, they will definitely be a top contender next season. For now, it appears a top-four finish will be the best Frank could do this run.
The Blues have only won once out of their last six Premier League outings, collecting as little as four points from the 15 played for over those six.
