Liverpool did what they do best inside Anfield when they hosted Tottenham for first versus second in the English Premier League.

The two clubs, Tottenham and Liverpool, who have sat in first and second place for the majority of the campaign met at Anfield and put on a proper show for all watching.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds walked away with all the spoils after a late winner in the 90th minute. Before the towering header by Roberto Firmino that confirmed an Anfield victory, Spurs nearly put in a Mourinho masterclass and almost left with all three points.

Match Recap: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham

More from Liverpool FC

From the first whistle, the Reds were the better team out the blocks. This not because Spurs were off form, but the game plan for both managers went on as expected.

Klopp’s boys were relentless while peppering their opponents with repetitive attacking waves, while Spurs soaked up all the pressure working on their counter-attacking game that they perfected so well over time.

It took only 26 minutes of the game for the home side to break the deadlock through Mohamed Salah, who was the most lively player in the first 45 minutes. A bit of fortune when the ball deflected off a Spurs’ defender and hit the back of Hugo Lloris’ net.

Not long after the first goal of the game was scored, Son Heung-min levelled the playing field and finished off another crisp Tottenham goal against the run of play. The game was 1-1 by the 33rd minute and the visitors were exactly where they wanted to be.

The game went on with opportunities falling for both teams – the North Londoners having the best of them. Sadly, they were unable to finish their sitters, which eventually came back to haunt them.

In the dying minutes of the game, the Anfield side won a corner. Bobby Firimino got on the end of a perfectly placed Andrew Robertson corner. It was a picture all too familiar as we witness the Reds win another three points in the final moments.

The mentality of Liverpool outwitted the boringness of Tottenham and the final score read 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night. But it was after the game where the real enjoyment came.

Mourinho’s deluded comments

The Portuguese boss made sure he put his stamp on the game with some of the weirdest comments post-match. He firmly believes the “best team lost” on the night.

This was his response to the interviewer when asking him what he had to say to his counterpart on the touchline once the final whistle was blown.

Jose Mourinho on what he had to say to Klopp after the game:

"I told him the best team lost. He disagreed. That’s his opinion. By the way, if I behaved the way on the touchline like he does, I have no chance to stay there – and I’m out. That’s animated? That’s animated? Or do you want me to take the screen with the fourth official hands? (Via: dailystar.co.uk)"

Typical Jose on his best behaviour once again. But all-in-all, these comments just proved he feels his Spurs have a really good chance of taking the league this season.

But why are these comments so deluded and him the only person that believes that Liverpool were second best? That’s because the Reds shamed the North London side in every aspect of the game.

The Merseysiders had more ball possession (LFC 76% – 24% TOT), more shots at goal (LFC 17 – 8 TOT) and on target (LFC 11 – TOT 2).

They completed more passes into the final third (LFC 239 – 24 TOT). They strung together more passes (LFC 813 – 254 TOT) altogether. They had a far more superior pass completion rate compared to their opponents (LFC 88% – 61% TOT).

The comments just don’t coincide with the match stats or the result. However, it must be said, this is Jose showing his best form.

Liverpool 66 games untouched at Anfield

Besides Rhys Williams putting in a massive performance on his Premier League debut, Liverpool went onto number 66. That is 66 games unbeaten at Anfield!

During Klopp’s time and since their last defeat to Crystal Palace under the guidance of Sam Allardyce back in 2017, Klopp’s men have won 55 games, drawn 11, and lost nothing at Anfield.

dark. Next. Ruben Neves or Kalvin Phillips for Man United?

They now sit three points clear at the summit of the table after another victory over a top-6 rival and title contender.
