Tottenham

Fixtures

Attack 100%

Defence 23%

The first team we’ve looked at with outstanding fixtures and a game in GW1. Spurs demand your attention after some strong performances in Project Restart and an excellent opening that has only Burnley and Man United from teams that finished in last year’s top half! My initial draft includes 2 Spurs players and really you should have at least 1.

Main Pick

Harry Kane (FWD, 10.5m)

Like Leicester, there is a single focal point upon which you can focus on in Spurs’ attack. Kane had a fairly average first half of the season, but after lockdown, there was a noticeable difference. He was dropping deep less often, spending more time as the spearhead, annoying defenders and attacking the box.

It paid off with more goals per 90 mins, more passes received in the final 3rd of the pitch (and fewer in the other areas, showing he was pushed further forward), and 50% goal involvement! He went straight into my team after the fixtures were announced and he will almost certainly be there by next Saturday.

Differential Pick

Dele Alli (MID, 8.0m)

There’s not much to back up this other than my gut feeling, and Alli’s fantasy history. He slowed down in the last couple of seasons but in 2016/17 he got 18 goals and 11 assists! That is an incredible output and in the initial matches under Jose, he showed glimpses of that player again. It faded as Spurs did, but he could be great again.

Defensive Pick

More from Fantasy Premier League

Matt Doherty (DEF, 6.0m)

Whatever Spurs paid for Doherty it would have been a bargain, but under £15m really was a steal. Doherty is an incredible talent and an FPL star!

He will continue in the role Aurier took last year, pushing high while Davies tucks in to make a back 3. But Doherty has a better final product and is less likely to pick up a stupid booking (or red card). He is the other Spurs player in my team and he might well be there all season!

Steer Clear

Serge Aurier (DEF, 5.5m)

This might be a cop-out, considering I’ve just waxed lyrical about his replacement. Aurier’s time at Spurs is coming to an end. Doherty’s arrival suggests he will either be a bit-part player or out the door before the window shuts. And yet he is still in 5.4% of teams!
