Man United was one of the teams from the top six clubs in The Top Flight to land multiple signings this January transfer window. However, many believe one signing was made in desperation.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Man United added multimillion signing Bruno Fernandes and loan option, Odion Ighalo, just before the January window shut. The once-great Manchester club was in need of firepower and was long in the process of adding these additional weapons.

Unfortunately, moves for preferred targets got rejected by their parent clubs, forcing them to turn their attention to an ex-Premier League player who has been playing football in China for three years.

They waited way too long to fill in the hole left by Romelu Lukaku, who left the club in the summer, and have suffered a significant goal drought due to this miss management. Adding to the agenda in front of goal, top goalscorer Marcus Rashford sustained a major back injury.

Thankfully, positive news has come from the Red Devils’ camp of recent. Reports of him “driving himself” to attend training, proposing his comeback is on track, and hopefully, it could be sooner rather than later.

So where does this leave Man united with the signing of Odion Ighalo? They are being labelled as desperate for adding the Nigerian. Chelsea greats believe no other strikers wanted to join the club, as the turmoil at Old Trafford is quite visible to the public eye.

So a last-minute ditch for a 10th transfer option was the best the Manchester side could perform according to the ex-Chelsea stars.

A free hit for Man United

Anthony Martial cannot lead the line or is not as effective as he is playing on the side. Ighalo is a great target man, has excellent close control, and has a great variation of pace running in between lines. Can he score goals? We must wait before having a clear judgement on this.

His time in the Premier League, he has featured 55 times as a Hornet, scoring 16 goals and assisting another four in the process. Taking his total time in England into account (EPL and EFL Championship), in 89 appearances he has a good return of 36 goals and seven assists.

Playing for Watford for three years is quite different to playing for Man United for about six months. You could be six months at United and it could feel like it’s been years of playing under the spotlight and fingers of the fans if you not doing a good job.

A loan move for Odion Ighalo was the smartest move for them. It does count against them if Rashford gets injured again, or Ole abuses him while injured, or doesn’t return in time to help the team.

The transfer would have been a big miss. But still, this is based on him not scoring at United. For now, it makes all the sense if he doesn’t make the cut, the two parties can just cut ties and head their individual ways.

United can then make sure the summer they move in for a more suitable striker target as competition for Rashford and not just back up. If he succeeded, a back-up EPL experienced striker never hurt any club.
