It was exactly what was projected of Liverpool and not what Tottenham forecasted for the night, after they ended their game sharing points.

In the final day of Champions League football for the week, and the end of the first round, Matchday 3, Liverpool can be proud they joined Manchester City as the leaders of their respective groups. Spurs on the other hand, joins the other Manchester club in danger end of the group, but more Spurs than United.

The North London side is yet to win a match this Champions League term. It’s been the worst I’ve seen Pochettino’s Tottenham perform. If it has to be compare to a dark time, I would say the season where they were supposed to be mounting a title challenge, and literally lost the plot in the race during the 2015/2016 Premier League.

A quick recap of how it ended and where it leaves the last two English clubs – after round one has taken its course. Starting with the losers in this one – cause we would like to end the Champions League week on a high, enriching the excitement for the next Matchday.

PSV Eindhoven 2-2 Tottenham

More from The Top Flight

Best short description of their away encounter – A comedy of errors and a Hugo masterclass of blunders. Spurs were all over the place in defence. They went down in the first, came back well enough to steal more than a point.

Eventually ended up taking the lead, a short burst of applause, giving Spurs fans a sight of three points. It all but lasted 33 minutes for the North Londoners. Who else but PSV’s always reliable, Luuk de Jong to equalise against Mauricio’s men, who struggled to keep a lead all season.

Spurs current situation; They must win every match, no other options. Two home fixtures and one on the road gives them the benefit of the doubt. Two goals ahead of PSV Eindhoven and equal on points, Tottenham needs to be careful. The possibility of not qualifying for the knockouts of the Europa League beckons if they are to end last in Group B.

Liverpool 4-0 Red Star Belgrade

Not the 6-1 pounding PSG handed Red Star in the previous match. However, a win worthy of a first-place finish at the end of round one for Klopp and his Liverpool team. This was also thanks to Napoli coming away with one of the best results in the group fixtures so far.

A 2-2 draw between them and hosts PSG assured the Reds would top Group C. Goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and a brace from Mohamed Salah, gave the Anfield crowd a glimpse of what’s to come when they 100 percent firing. A clean sheet to silence Klopp’s critics of being heavy concedes in the competition, thanks to a great maiden performance by defensive midfielder, Fabinho.

The Merseyside outfit face two trips on the road, with Red Star their first one away. Napoli could only manage a draw in their fixture at the intense Serbian side’s hostile stadium. The hostile atmosphere is quite intimidating, letting us know we cannot expect another one-sided affair.

Next. Alonso happy to stay at the Bridge. dark

This has left all three, Liverpool, Napoli and PSG, a point apart from each other. Still anybody’s qualification for these European hotties. Like the manager said, it’s going down to the wire this one.
