With the end of the World Cup, transfer rumors are taking center stage. Arsenal and Liverpool looking for a bargain in the midfield with one of the best German prospects available.
The Report
Free agent midfielder Max Meyer, formerly of Schalke FC, is reportedly close to signing with Arsenal. According to the Mirror, Meyer, 22, has been in contact with both the London-based club and Liverpool after his contract with the Bundesliga club expired in May.
It is being reported that Meyer’s wage demands have put off both EPL clubs with some reports saying that the German midfielder is looking for a 4 million pound a year contract. Unai Emery disclosed that Arsenal’s transfer business had concluded with the signings of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendozi, unless a “great opportunity” comes up.
Liverpool has revamped their midfield this summer with the additions of Fabinho, Naby Keita, and Xherdan Shaquiri. Adding Meyer to either of these teams seems slightly unnecessary, considering how much money both clubs have spent on their respective midfields.

Who is Max Meyer?
Max Meyer has been an exciting prospect in Germany for several years now. A technically gifted passer with a low center of gravity and excellent control, Meyer has received comparisons to Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil.
He has played as a number 10 attacking midfielder and as a deep-lying playmaker. His versatility is one of the more intriguing aspects of his game.
He can play almost anywhere in the middle of the park. However, that versatility may have been a detriment to his career. No one seems to know where he should play. His finishing is erratic and his passing is not at a world class level yet.
Meyer did play in the Olympics in 2016 with Germany, but he was left off the squad for the Confederations Cup in 2017, and this year’s World Cup. He has been in the Germany youth set-up for a long time, but that has only translated to 4 caps in total with the senior squad, the last coming in 2016.

Meyer is an intriguing talent with a high upside. The fact that he is a free agent makes him even more interesting to big clubs looking for midfield talent. Will he ever develop into a world class level midfielder is unknown now. It would seem wise for either, Arsenal or Liverpool, to at least give the Germany playmaker a chance on a bigger stage.
