Liverpool and England have been hit by a big blow as The Reds announced that defender Joe Gomez will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup due to injury.
Liverpool announced that defender Joe Gomez will miss the Champions League final and the World Cup due to ankle injury that has forced operation. Gomez joins Liverpool’s injury list that also includes Emre Can, Joel Matip, and fellow England internationals Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain — who will also miss the reminder of the season and the World Cup.
After sustaining an ankle injury in March playing for England, Gomez returned to action against West Brom in the Premier League, and played through a minor injury that aggravated in to a more serious problem that it had to be dealt with a surgery.

In a season where Liverpool’s first choice right-back Nathaniel Clyne missed a big part also due to injury, Gomez was integral in the Premier League campaign and on Liverpool’s Champions League run, with the final due to be played on March 26.
This season has been Joe’s most prolific since joining from Charlton in 2015, making 31 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, earning three caps for England, and making his full debut against Germany last October.
Gomez told Liverpool’s website that he is gutted about missing the most important game in Liverpool’s recent history and the World Cup:
"“Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery. Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team.“I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre-season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season!”"

Gomez’s injury is certainly a big miss for Liverpool — who are already short on squad options for the important fixture against Brighton and for the Champions League final against Real Madrid — but also for England in the World Cup, considering the plans Gareth Southgate has for the squad and how he could have used Gomez versatility at the back.
Liverpool has also informed that Gomez will be back for pre-season, with his return scheduled to happen in July and will go through the whole rehabilitation process before the season starts.
