Manchester City: Just buy Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang already

Manchester City are apparently ‘hung up’ on the price tag of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but it’s just a matter of time. We all know they’re going to buy him.

When has money ever stopped the deep, oil-laden pockets of Manchester City’s brain trust? Correct answer – never. The Manchester Evening News points out that the sky blue have spent over £300m in transfer fees over the past three summers. And yet, the prolonged success has been slim.

Kevin de Bruyne could realistically be the only bonafide success that the Citizens have invested in. But it has certainly not stopped the outrageous fees from being paid.

Hearing that Borussia Dortmund’s prized striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is going to cost £65m didn’t strike me as a problem. This is Manchester City. They have money for days and they have no qualms spending it wherever they want.

I certainly wouldn’t call it a ‘snag’ like the MIrror is putting it. Money is no snag for Manchester City.

Plus, when you think about what has held back City in the past, it could be said that the whims of Sergio Aguero have determined City’s fate. When he is at the top of his game, which, granted, is most of the time, City are cruising. But when he falters even in the slightest, so too does the team.

Let’s just say that Wilfried Bony was no sort of replacement.

The thought of Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the same team is a fearsome prospect from other team’s perspectives. The two have such an explosiveness that Pep Guardiola may be well-suited to fit them both into the same formation.

As a side note, wouldn’t it just be so appropriate that Guardiola would continue to filch Dortmund’s hard-earned players even when he’s moved to Manchester City?

Consistency was a huge problem for Manchester City last year. They were shut out nine times. Needless to say, a team of their offensive power should not be getting shut out. But perhaps another telling stat is their record when they scored just one goal. The Citizens were 2-2-7 when scoring just one goal. Not exactly a testament to the strength of their defense.

Some may blame Vincent Kompany’s inability to stay healthy and that’s a fair assessment. But I propose another solution. Manchester City rely on their offensive power. When it doesn’t click and they can’t score more than a goal, they fail. City is predicated on their ability to pile on the goals.

Take for instance their two matches against Newcastle. The first one they won 6-1 with Sergio Aguero scoring five goals. However, after that match, Aguero went on a rather negative spell where he scored just one goal in five matches. Unsurprisingly, City lost three of those matches, drew one and won one.

And that second Newcastle match at the close of the season? It finished just 1-1. Aguero didn’t score.

Even Aguero needs a foil. Aubameyang would accomplish that feat with flying colors.
