Real Madrid Still Want De Gea

It was a very busy summer for Manchester United. On one hand they brought in some fantastic signings but on the other, they faced a prolonged battle over their number one, David de Gea. The Spaniard was heavily linked with Real Madrid throughout the entire transfer window and the situation wasn’t resolved until the very last minutes. The goalkeeper stayed put for now but rumours are already beginning to circulate.

De Gea signed a new contract with the Manchester club despite pushing for a move away from Old Trafford. It seemed as though Madrid got their man with a deal seemingly in place. However, last minute problems caused the Spanish club to miss the deadline resulting in such a transfer never materialising.

During this period Van Gaal dropped de Gea from his squad, claiming the young shot-stopper was not in the right mental state to play. His vacancy was filled by Romero, a signing which looked a direct replacement for the outgoing de Gea. In the end, de Gea stayed and has yet again established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Surely United won’t let him go now…

Reports from the Sun state otherwise suggesting the La Liga giants have not given up on getting their man. Despite de Gea singing a new contract and stating how happy he is at the world’s biggest club, many think Real will sign the shot stopper next summer.

A £30 million release clause in his new contract is likely to be met by the Spanish side who will not mind paying so much for the player. De Gea has a huge career in front of him and looks set to be one of the best keepers in the world. The 25-year-old’s new contract with United may just be a negotiating tool, used to bump up the price for their number one. As sad as this sounds, contracts don’t seem to mean much in today’s game.

He is certainly worth the money but selling such a star would reflect badly on United. Selling such a world class talent to their direct European rivals would surely suggest that Manchester United aren’t quite the club they once were.

I would personally love De Gea to stay in the Premier League. I see him as one of the top 2 keepers in the world, alongside Neur, and he still has age on his side. His development since joining Old Trafford has been staggering and shows just how good a judge Alex Ferguson was. He’s so good for the league and can be a true Premier League legend if he does decide to stay. However, with his family back in Madrid, you certainly couldn’t blame David for leaving. Either way, his future is very exciting.

De Gea looks set to stay for this season at least but don’t be surprised if it all kicks off again in the summer. Real Madrid still want the keeper and a club like that do not usually miss out. They’ll still be furious about not singing him last year so expect rumors to continue circulating.
