Newcastle United are on the verge of making another splash in this summer’s transfer market. The Magpies are close to a deal that would see the club sign French attacking midfielder Florian Thauvin from Ligue 1 side Marseille.

The 22-year old has been a player on Newcastle’s radar for almost the entirety of the summer. With a deal now imminent according to the Daily Mirror, manager Steve McClaren has officially put his stamp the club.

Once the signing is made official, the reported fee of £12 million will take the Magpies summer spending total to more than £50 million. A large amount considering last season Newcastle United were relegation possibilities until the final match of the season.

The amount spent this summer as well as Steve McClaren being appointed to the club’s board of directors as apart of his hiring as manager could be the club signaling a changing in their ways. With owner Mike Ashley wanting European competition at St. James Park, the club may finally be willing to pay their way there.

Also signed by the club this summer Chancel Mbemba, Gini Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Toney. The club are also likely to make a run at West Brom star Saido Berahino but will likely face competition from both West Ham and Tottenham.

Florian Thauvin joins Newcastle United following two season’s with Ligue 1 side Marseille. His time with the club saw the French youngster make 79 appearances for French club, finding the back of the net 15 times while also adding 14 assists.

His stats with the French club show that not only can Florian Thauvin score in the attack, but will also contribute to the team’s attack through his passing and vision of the field. Overall, Florian Thauvin could be the best signing of the summer for Newcastle United.

With the amount of youth added to the club this summer, Newcastle could be planning for a grand future. A future that will hopefully see them return to the upper table of the Premier League and maybe one day take home the top flight’s trophy.

However, that accomplishment is still a long way off. What manager Steve McClaren will likely attempt to accomplish this season is a mid-table finish. The last two seasons have seen the Magpies hover near relegation, something Newcastle will hope to avoid this year.

Whatever the outcome, no one can deny that Newcastle United have improved this summer. The signings made will likely help the club in the present and the future, leading them back to the safety of the Premier League’s upper table.
