As with teams like Fulham, it has been a frustrating season for Newcastle

Newcastle United witnessed a somewhat ethically uncertain deal from the Saudi Private Investment Fund, which in turn would have benefitted the aspirations of the club greatly, fall through at the beginning of the season.

More from Premier League

On the other hand, witnessing a former heavyweight like Newcastle only just avoid relegation is riddled with its own feelings of disappointment.

Although much couldn’t be expected from them this season, the discontent that surrounds the current ownership and tactical philosophy that Steve Bruce deploys is enough to see this season as a huge failure.

One of their most exciting performances came in early May in a 4-2 away win over Leicester. Callum Wilson bagged two of the goals which led them to 4-0 just before 80 minutes.

However, Newcastle then squandered two sloppy goals from Leicester despite holding on to the vital three points. Even in their most emphatic of victories, Newcastle has continually been littered with costly mistakes.

Newcastle’s issues clearly go deeper than the problems on the pitch. Simply suggesting transfers or a new manager will likely not cut the likelihood of future seasons being just as mediocre as this one.

The club needs change, but nobody can yet figure out an answer on who exactly will be enacting it.
