Chelsea to extend defender’s contract for another season
Chelsea fans are in a state of bliss right now. On Wednesday night, they defeated Real Madrid 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League. They’ve set up an all-English final against Manchester City. But, let’s go back to December. Do you really think Chelsea from December would be able to pull this off? Not a chance.
Anyway, things get even better for Chelsea fans, as one of their defenders — possibly their best one — Thiago Silva is reportedly set to renew his contract with the London club for another year.
Fabrizio Romano put a tweet out shortly after the Champions League semi-final about this. He said that Thomas Tuchel, the board, and everyone else at the club is very happy with the Brazilian center-back’s performances, and would love him to sign an extension for another year:
How has Thiago Silva played for Chelsea this season? Is it worth it to give him a contract extension for another season?

Thiago Silva joined the club back in the summer of 2020, when Chelsea needed an elite, experienced, consistent center-back. They had already spent a lot of money on other players like Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, etc. So, they needed a player for cheap that could provide them with a lot of experience and quality at the back.
The club went for a player who got to the Champions League final in the previous season and basically cost him zero transfer fee, as his contract had already expired. Since Silva has arrived at the club, he has been absolutely great at the heart of Chelsea’s defense.
Thiago Silva has been one of Chelsea’s best and most consistent players so far this season — even during the time at which Chelsea weren’t really doing well.
He’s only gotten better since Tuchel’s arrival at the club — just like the rest of the team — and has been starting at the center of Tuchel’s three-man defense whenever he has been fit.
The Brazilian international had a couple of rough games and has had to face a few injuries during his time at the club. He’d hope that those injury problems don’t trouble him next season if he was to continue.
All in all, this is a great decision by the Chelsea board. They’d have to start looking for a young center-back that can potentially replace Silva when the time comes, but surely, you can trust the veteran to do the job just fine till then.
