Chelsea have suffered their first defeat at home and under Thomas Tuchel since joining in January. Who should take the blame for their humiliating loss to West Brom in the first bit of Premier League action for the day?

From how the game kicked off between Chelsea and West Brom at Stamford Bridge, nobody would have predicted a scoreline that read 2-5 in favour of the visitors.

A costly red card to the returning Thiago Silva in the 29th minute was the start of everything that fell apart at the Bridge for Tuchel. The manager, who is renowned as a tactician, failed tactically to stop Sam Allardyce’s men from taking all the points.

The Blues were the best team from the offset and were rewarded with their 90% plus ball possession in the first half with the opening goal of the game.

Christian Pulisic finished a rebound off a deflected Marcos Alonso free-kick. This gave the impression the game was heading in the forecasted direction – and that was a Blues’ victory.

Soon after the opener, Chelsea were hit with a Silva sending off after he received his second yellow card of the game. This was where the Baggies window of opportunity opened and they punished with no second asking required.

The first brace of the encounter came through the best Baggie of the season, Matheus Pereira. His two came before the halftime break and gave his team an unexpected lead.

The second half started with West Brom having the momentum with them and again they took their chances when it mattered, keeping the three points out of the home side’s reach.

Callum Robinson brace and Mbaye Diange’s one goal were the last goals of the second half for West Brom – capping off their 2-5 triumph. The two goals by Robinson took his EPL goal tally for the season to five – all of them coming against Chelsea.

The substitute Mason Mount tried to get the Blues back into the game but West Brom had too much for them in yet another Sam Allardyce masterclass.

Who is to blame for Chelsea’s first loss?

  • Thomas Tuchel first and foremost for his team selection and how he set up his formation
  • Also for the manager to leave his most influential player Mason Mount on the bench was a big mistake that came back to haunt him
  • Thiago Silva starting and looking extremely rusty as it was his first game back since February 04 is another error by the German manager.
  • After receiving a red card for his efforts he should undoubtedly share the responsibility with his manager
  • Timo Werner needs to take a lot of blame week in and week out whenever he doesn’t score. He gets over enough chances to put the game to bed and is part of the reason Chelsea couldn’t pull away from the visitors on Saturday
  • Marcos Alonso defending remains questionable as he was exposed a number of times in the 90 minutes against the Baggies
  • Jorginho looked unorganised and couldn’t deal with the counter-attack – he was at fault many times.

West Brom with their well-deserved win keeps their Premier League survival hopes alive for another week.

This was the perfect result on the return for the West Brom players from international duty and could be the start of something good for Allardyce. Can they build on this shocking result?
