What was spent in the Premier League’s January transfer window 2021?
The English Premier League’s transfer window officially closed on February the 1st and it was far from what we’ve come accustomed to in the past.
Not really a transfer window where we had to hold our breath because there were some amazing deals but this was undoubtedly and directedly a ripple effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both transfer windows, last year summer and this year winter were met with less spending compared to windows prior, and that’s due to the financial restraints clubs had to manoeuver around with, in the market.

This has been the lowest total spent by Premier League clubs in a January transfer window for the past five winter windows – with 2018’s amount of £465,20m still being the highest in recent years.
Last year this time EPL teams spent £232,96m, according to Sky Sports. In back-to-back winter windows, Manchester United have made the most expensive acquisitions.
Last season, which is arguably their best signing in the last five years, Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon for £68million. This year the Red Devils acquired Amad Diallo from Atalanta for £37million.
What Premier League team sent the most players out the exit doors at their respective club?
The team to send the most players through the exit doors was Arsenal with 11 players either sold, loaned out, or released.
With them, the majority of EPL clubs parted ways with nine or less outfielder, proving it was about saving money and not spending money this window.
This is said to be the second of many transfer windows to be affected by the pandemic with the knock-on effect predicted to have a long-lasting influence on the market.
This is not to suggest we will not see big deals go through for wanted players such as Erling Braut Haaland and Kylian Mbappe – but rather clubs will have to sell their top selection for below their transfer value perhaps.
