Harry Kane leaves it late to deliver Tottenham Hotspur all three points, in a tightly fought contest against West Bromwich Albion.
Tottenham went into their clash with West Bromwich Albion in red hot form, winning three of their last five games. West Bromwich Albion prevailed in the team’s last matchup in May 2018 at The Hawthorn’s stadium.
However, Tottenham’s squad depth as well as the great form of star attacking duo, striker Harry Kane and winger Son Heung-min, looked to influence a very different result this time.
Both sides made changes ahead of the fixture. Defender Branislav Ivanovic and midfielder Mattheus Pereira were both admissions for West Brom, following positive Coronavirus tests during the week. For Tottenham, it was the first Premier League start for star winger Gareth Bale, who was signed on loan from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

West Bromwich Albion looked the more lively of the two sides in the opening half. The home side’s best chances coming from crosses in wide areas. Striker Karlan Grant failed to capitalise on a heading chance before a cross from forward Callum Robinson forced a goal-line clearance from defender Eric Dier.
Despite having 62 percent possession, Tottenham struggled to place any dominance on the game in the first half. Their only effort on goal in the first 45 minutes coming from a blocked shot from forward Son Heung-min.
Spurs rebounded from their questionable first-half performance, showing more promise going forward. Tottenham’s consistent pressure eventually paid off with Kane making the late breakthrough for Spurs with a header in the 88th minute off a cross by defender Matt Doherty.
Today’s win sees Tottenham rise to the top of the table, the first time that the club has been there in over six years. The Spurs will look to stay at the top of the table, with a tantalising clash against rivals Manchester City coming after the International break.
Harry Kane’s Milestone Goal
Harry Kane’s header marked his 150th goal in the Premier League, placing him ninth in the all-time leading top goalscorers in the Premier League. The Englishman sits level with Former Liverpool star and English Striker Michael Owen, who sits at 150 league goals.
At only 27 years of age, Kane looks likely to challenge Alan Shearer’s astounding tally of 260 English top-flight goals. To move into eighth in the all-time goalscorers tally, Kane will have to pass former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe, who scored 162 in the league.
The two-time Golden Boot winner is likely to post a high tally again this season with the star striker in great form so far, already scoring seven goals this season, while also picking up eight assists.
Where to now for West Bromwich Albion?
The Baggies will be disappointed to not be sharing a point with Tottenham following their solid defensive display.
They still remain in the relegation zone, with a tough fixture coming up for the club which will see them play both Manchester clubs among others in their next five games.
Slaven Bilić’s men will be hoping for a solid display in order to ensure their survival in the Premier League, their first season back in England’s top flight since the 2018 campaign.
