Liverpool made a League 1 side of Atalanta in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash all thanks to one player.

Okay… The whole team put in an extra shift on their travels to Italy actually. The Reds took the home side down by five goals while stopping everything on the other end of the pitch, despite having a 19-year-old as a centre back. But the real deal was up front for Liverpool.

The player in discussion here is Diogo Jota. What a summer signing he has been and fits in with the whole idea that the Reds’ most surprising buys are the ones that become the biggest bangers at the club. That’s exactly what Jota had been since pulling on the bike sweater and taking the pitch.

To make it clear so we know that most shockers have become bangers, here are just two examples of Liverpool’s surprising transfer treats;

Sadio Mane

At the time, Jurgen Klopp wanted to reunite with his Dortmund wonderkid, Mario Gotze. The Reds were not attractive enough during the early stages of Klopp’s tenure, failing miserably in their Gotze attempt.

They turned to Mane, who now nobody can argue with, is the best right-winger in the Premier League. A £34 million transfer that has brought them the Champions League, Premier League, other titles, and many memorable moments.

Mohamed Salah

Not a target but definitely a second choice for the club. The Anfield side had their sights set on Julian Brandt, who was at Bayer Leverkusen at the time. He opted for another venture and eventually moved to Jurgen’s old club, Borussia Dortmund.

Then they wasted no time and wrapped up the deal for Mo Salah from AS Roma for a then club-record fee of £34.3m. He went on to help Sadio achieve Liverpool’s major honours while receiving the Golden Boot back-to-back and broke the record for most goals scored in a 38-game season, scoring 32 goals in 38 games.

These are just two, the list goes on and we can easily admit that sporting director Micheal Edwards, Jurgen Klopp, and the transfer committee, have the perfect system going. They have been more successful with transfers than any other club in the league.

Now their most recent return

More from Premier League

This summer past, after Liverpool completed the amazing capture of Thiago Alcântara, they turn their attention to Ismaila Sarr. Relegated Watford wanted in excess of £50m for the winger but the Reds were not ready to spit out that much, considering this summer window was affected by the pandemic and that they were signing a demoted forward.

After pulling out of the deal for the Hornet, the Reds secretly and quietly went in for Wolverhampton’s Diogo Jota. Still, a Premier League forward but the Reds acquired his services for less than what Sarri was priced at.

The champions of England contracted Jota for a total of £45m, a fee at the time unjustifiable… Or so we thought. The Portuguese has now become Klopp’s most in-form goalscorer. He was bought as a backup, cover, and one for the future, but now cannot be kept or taken out of the starting XI.

The new cap has already scored seven goals in 10 games, with a hat-trick in their 5-0 demolition of Atalanta in the Champions League. He is the quickest player to seven ahead of Fernando Torres (12 appearances), Daniel Sturridge (13 appearances:), and Mohamed Salah (13 appearances).

Who robbed who?

After weeks of Wolves fans thinking they got the better end of the deal and ripped Liverpoool off with the £45m paid for him, they now hang their head in disbelief, that this is the same player they sold for so “cheap”. With him hitting the ground running, the Reds are having the last laugh. Fair to say… Nuno Santo was the only Wanderer sad to see the Jota leave Molineux Stadium.

"Just 10 games into the Portuguese’s Anfield career, £45m is already starting to look like a snip. Edwards, it seems, is far from finished yet.It is worth remembering that the favourable payment terms agreed to by Wolves and Ki-Jana Hoever’s move in the opposite direction mean that Liverpool are effectively getting his first 12 months at the club free of charge. The Reds sit first in the Premier League standings and enjoyed a flawless first round in the Champions League. No goals conceded and eight goals scored. They have really been paid back in full, considering that the forward is basically free for the first 12 months thanks to the structure of the deal.
