Chelsea’s working day and night to conclude their summer business but before that can happen a new goalkeeper is vital to next season’s push.

On Saturday, Chelsea submitted their second bid for Rennes’ goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. As per Goal, the Blues made an initial offer of £15m (€17m) to the Ligue 1 side which didn’t stand long before it was rejected.

Moving on from there the Chelsea board moved in quickly with their second bid, increasing it to £18 million (€20m). Since making the bid on Saturday, nothing has been reported from both camps except Mendy being left out of their matchday squad.

More from Chelsea

"Chelsea have made an improved bid of €20 million (£18m/$24m) for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Goal can confirm. With the future of current No.1 Kepa Arrizabalaga in doubt, the Blues have identified Mendy as an ideal option to provide competition for the Spaniard. The Sun reported earlier in the week that Rennes turned down Chelsea’s offer of €17m (£15m/$20m) for Mendy, and Frank Lampard‘s side have now returned with an improved bid. As it stands, Kepa Arrizabalaga is on his way out or will serve as the second choice to the potential new stopper. Kepa is in the position where he will have to prove his worth and will have to state a case to the manager if he wants to reclaim his number 1 spot.

Conceding the most goals out of the top-six clubs can not go unpunished. Also, having the worst shot-save ratio of all the goalkeepers in the Premier League will not help Frank Lampard’s side fight for silverware.

Kepa and Chelsea’s defence was so poor that the three teams promoted from the EFL Championship conceded fewer goals than the Premier League side. A commanding figure in Thiago Silva was brought in to help improve this weak stat. However, it will take more than the ex-PSG captain to change things around at the back.

A new keep is imperative to them challenging on all fronts. Malang Sarr was also brought in on a free but will go out on loan again to continue his development before joining up with Frank’s squad.

Edouard Mendy, the Rennes’ goalkeeper has spent all of his playing days in France. Prior to the pandemic he and his teammates were doing well in the French top flight. They had one of the top defences last season, sitting joint-second with the champions PSG.

He also helped his first club Reims gain promotion from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1, when they were crowned championship back in 2017/18. They are underway already in France, having started their league campaign for the season.

Rennes drew and won their first two opening matches, respectively. Mendy played the opener when they draw to Lille 1-1, but then missed the following fixture where they beat Montpellier 2-1, with Romain Salin selected for the day

Mendy was missing from the squad selection, indicating there could be a move on the cards for the Senegalese stopper.
