Matt Doherty completes Tottenham move with medical scheduled this weekend
Tottenham Hotspur are well poised to announce their third signing of the summer.
Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty has completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur as the two clubs reach an agreement over the transfer fee believed to be in the region of £15m. Previously, a bid of £12m, potentially rising to £20, was offered by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Matt Doherty, during his time with Wolves, has established himself as one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League. The Republic of Ireland international has been one of the vital figures in Nuno Espirito Santo’s robust tactical system at the Molineux.
After a ten-year association with the club, the Wolves hierarchy decided to allow Doherty to seek a new challenge, citing a decent return for the 28-year-old who arrived from the Bohemians for a measly figure of £75,000.
In the midst of a minor rebuild post-Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho is starting to impart his identity to the Tottenham squad. As a few members depart, Spurs are working diligently to fill the gaps visible this summer.
With Serge Aurier set to follow Kyle Walker-Peters on the way out of Tottenham, Jose Mourinho has likened an experienced full-back in his defensive set up ahead of the upcoming campaign. Doherty emerged as an ideal target for the Portuguese manager.

"Matt Doherty will have a medical at Tottenham this weekend after Wolves accepted a £15 million bid.Wolves have agreed to sell the Republic of Ireland international, with Doherty due to put the finishing touches to his move over the next 48 hours. Jose Mourinho has been a long-term admirer of the wing-back and a fee was agreed on Friday. (The Telegraph)"
Despite flourishing in a five-defender system deployed by Nuno Espirito Santo, Doherty’s positional acumen is relatively unknown in a 4-2-3-1 shape, a system which Jose Mourinho prefers. Perhaps, the 28-year-old will enjoy the license to thurst forward similar to Aurier.
The departure of Doherty would leave Wolves squad thin of options in the wing-back positions. Meanwhile, negotiations continue for Arsenal’s versatile midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles and left-back Faouzi Ghoulam of Napoli.
For Spurs, Matt Doherty would be the third signing of the summer, following Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg and Joe Hart. There is a consensus that business won’t cease once the Wolves defender completes his medical and remaining formalities with the London club. Currently, Toulouse midfielder Ibrahim Sangare is on the club’s radar.
In terms of departure, record-signing Tanguy Ndombele faces an uncertain future at the club with Jose Mourinho keen to let go off the French midfielder. Inter Milan remain interested in signing the 23-year-old.
