Emiliano Martinez is refusing to play a bit-part role behind Bernd Leno next season.

Aston Villa are poised to make a £10million bid for Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The Villians are yet to make a signing this summer as they face paucity of options in the shot-stopping department with Tom Heaton yet to recover from a knee injury inflicted in January.

Emiliano Martinez has observed his stocks rise suddenly when the Argentine goalkeeper replaced Bernd Leno, who suffered a knee ligament injury, in the starting eleven. The 27-year-old played a vital role in Arsenal’s promising results during Project Restart, including the FA Cup victory.

Despite a resurgence in fortunes, Martinez is expected to remain behind Bernd Leno in the pecking order. The Arsenal keeper is keen to seek regular game time away from the club this summer.

Citing Martinez’s desire, the Arsenal hierarchy is open to allowing the Argentine stopper to seek a permanent move away from the London club. It is understood that several clubs in the Premier League and La Liga are interested in signing Emi Martinez. The price tag is believed to be around £20million, but there is a room for negotiation.

As things stand, Aston Villa are the first club who have made advances for Martinez. The Lions are preparing a £10m opening bid for the goalkeeper target. Manager Dean Smith is facing a shortage in that area of the pitch having landed Pepe Reina on an interim basis only.

Orjan Nyland in his few appearances in the Premier League has looked out of place in the physical demands of the English top-flight, leaving Villa in a desperate search for an established player to feature between the sticks.

Besides a concrete interest in Martinez, Aston Villa insiders are believed to be keeping a close eye on the situation around Manchester United’s Sergio Romero. He is facing an uncertain fate at the club owing to the meteoric rise of academy graduate Dean Henderson, who will not be sent out on loan from Manchester again.

Romero himself is eager to leave Old Trafford in search of a regular starting spot, having deputised for David De Gea since 2015. The Argentina international could be a potential makeweight by Manchester United as they continue talks for skipper Jack Grealish.
