Transfer News: Chelsea announces the signing of Thiago Silva
Chelsea ends the week off one Thiago Silva heavier and kickstarts the weekend in style!
Happy Friday! Well, only for Chelsea fans at the moment. A sad day 24 hours ago for Thiago Silva, who bid farewell to his fellow Paris Saint-Germain teammates in a tearjerking goodbye message. But around every corner of sadness awaits the road to happiness.
Such is the situation for the Brazilian defender who has completed his transit to Stamford Bridge after being released by PSG and becoming a free agent. The Blues from London acted with conviction and were quicker than fast to complete the signing of an experienced centre back.
The deal signed after passing his medical on Thursday runs for a year with an option to extend for a further year thereafter (a full two-year deal was initially proposed). He was earning a huge salary at PSG, amounting to £330,000 per week. If he gets anywhere close to this, it would make him the highest earner at the Bridge, surpassing Kepa Arrizabalaga, N’Golo Kante, and Timo Werner.

He follows in the footsteps of his countryman, David Luiz, who joined the Blues for a second stint in a move worth £34 million back in August 2016. Luiz, who is currently employed by Arsenal now, would have been watering at the mouth at the prospect of playing alongside his close friend and Bralizan CB partner. Sadly, life barely works out like your favourite movie.
At the age of 35-years-old, the CB has accomplished many things from the Italian Serie A to the French Ligue 1, and at international level. During his time on the pitch, he brought in 26 trophies. This will undoubtedly and factually make him the most decorated player in the Chelsea squad.
With such a unique stat, you’d think he would be playing week in and week out. Yet, it is to be seen if Thiago Silva can handle the demand of the English Premier League but, there is no denying that his presence will be felt and he will add quality in depth.
Having recently played Liverpool in the Champions League, he knows all too well about how competitive English teams are. So he has had his fair share of English preparations, and who better to pepper a new player joining England’s top flight than the champions of England themselves. It’s like the CEO of the league interviewed the player for Chelsea.
