Jose Mourinho is keen to add an experienced full-back to his Tottenham squad.

Tottenham Hotspur have closed in on a deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign right-back Matt Doherty. It is understood that the deal will cost £12m in fees upfront with an added bonus of £8m later, ultimately amounting to £20m.

An official bid is yet to be made but the discussions are progressing at an encouraging pace. Serge Aurier, who has been fairly solid under Jose Mourinho, is reportedly seeking a move away from Tottenham this summer. AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen have been linked with him recently.

Mourinho, in addition to midfield, has prioritised the full-back department this summer with Kyle Walker-Peters leaving for Southampton earlier on in the window. The Spurs boss has been after an experienced campaigner to marshal the wide areas of the defence.

More from Premier League

Matt Doherty, during the past two Premier League campaigns, has grown in leaps and bounds in the system deployed by Nuno Espirito Santo, establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in English football. However, there are question marks over his efficiency in a four-man defence system.

"Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Matt Doherty.Wolves are seeking in the region of £20 million in exchange for the player’s services, but Spurs are considering putting in a lower bid while making the difference with add-ons.Head coach Jose Mourinho is also lacking replacements in that position, and Doherty’s ability to play at left-back could serve Tottenham well, too. With games coming thick and fast next season for Tottenham, Jose Mourinho is aware of the importance of having a deep squad to rotate his players during the run-ins. Thus far, Spurs have managed to sign Joe Hart on a free transfer, and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg from Southampton.

Tanguy Ndombele, arriving last season for a record transfer fee, faces an uncertain future at Spurs with Jose Mourinho keen on selling and chairman Daniel Levy reticent to sanction the deal. Inter Milan are monitoring the situation closely and are highly interested in the French midfielder.
