Man City failed to progress once again in the Champions League after their 3-1 loss to Lyon in the quarter-finals.

It was a sad Saturday for all those from Manchester City. Hell, it was a painful weekend for the whole of Manchester as the Cityzens and the Red Devils exited their respective European cups within 24 hours from each other.

After Maxwel Cornet’s single goal and Moussa Dembélé‘s brace confirmed Manchester will be voted out of the quarter-finals for a third consecutive time since Pep taking over, the internet got heated with Bernardo Silva and Liverpool fans.

The player, not holding back, sent a tweet out specifically directed at the Reds Army. The player stated he is “sorry for you but for the wrong reasons…pathetic”. Wow! Strong words coming from a player that has made a mockery of pressing and delicate situations priory to the spat on Twitter and their humbling loss to the French resistance.

Did it end there? Nope. The Liverpool fans gave him a piece of their mind. Even ex-Liverpool player John Aldridge got in on the action. Take on one and you will take them all on. Actually can’t see why Bernardo was so fixed on this instead of actually realising how bad it was to go out against Lyon. That and if you can give, you must be able to receive as well.

Lyon coming from the “Farmers League” and Man City coming from the “best league” in Europe’s top five, this was supposed to be a no-contest showing for Pep Guardiola and his boys. Unfortunately, one team wanted it more and also took their rare chances when it was gifted to them.

Raheem Sterling’s miss was so bad it was worthy of a cup exit and was ultimately the tipping point of the encounter. That single moment of poor execution in front of goal displayed the whole night for Man City. Kevin de Bruyne was the only player performing out of his socks.

Why all the hostility though?

Well, firstly the chant led by Silva after clinching the Premier League over Liverpool in the 2018-2019 season started boiling the pot. The chant, as per the Reds, mocks the tragedy of Liverpool supporter Sean Cox and fans getting beaten.

Then there was the Gaurd of Honour snub by the Portuguese midfielder when they met on the night they gave the Premier League champions a 4-0 hiding. Put this together with what they see as a bad attitude for a footballer, the dish being served here is pure malice!

Next season’s going to be heated

More from Liverpool FC

Next season’s title push between Liverpool and Manchester City is going to be a heated one. The two have been neck-and-neck for the past three seasons for the same silverware. The animosity between the pair and their fans appear to be growing with each season that passes. Especially when you have players feeding fuel to the fire like this on social media.

There is a rivalry growing amongst the duo who have been miles ahead of the rest of their counterparts since Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola moved to England. However, Man City is far away from being the giants that Liverpool has established themselves to be, thanks to decades of success.

Man City’s Champions League loss concluded a rather below average campaign. Only the EFL Cup to show for and an 18-point drop off from the Reds is far from acceptable for the most expensive Premier League team ever assembled.

They should be in the finals of every competition and taking titles with ease. But it appears the keyboard wars are more important to players like Bernardo Silva, who really was asking for it considering his behaviour prior to the Champions League mishit.
