Reports: Nemanja Matic signs a new contract at Manchester United till 2023

Nemanja Matic has been a key figure in Manchester United’s recent surging form of 16 games unbeaten across all competitions.

Manchester United are all set to reward Nemanja Matic for reviving his Old Trafford career successfully. The Serbian, during the starting phase of the season, found himself behind the likes of Scott McTominay, Fred, and Andreas Pereira in the central midfield pecking order.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s insistence on playing the youth coupled with Matic struggling with fitness issues made sure that the Serbia international was linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the winter transfer window.

Considering how United’s number 31 struggled to resonate with the team’s intensity while playing, parting ways was a rational decision for the club as well as the player. However, Matic was not going to bow out without a fight, as he fought his way into the starting XI when Scott McTominay suffered a knee ligament injury on Boxing Day.

Nemanja Matic’s road to resurgence started with a sharp cameo appearance at the Emirates Stadium on New Year’s Day.  Despite a 2-0 loss, the Serbian pushed Solskjaer’s men on as they failed to translate their period of dominance into goals. The defensive midfielder’s best performance this season came in United’s 1-0 victory over Man City in the League Cup.

Since then, Matic has enjoyed a steady rise in the Manchester United lineup, also, in the process, managing to win his gaffer’s trust. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to ensure his side maintains a compact shape while allowing his forwards the complete freedom, has relied on the former Chelsea man to anchor his midfield.

The 31-year-old, with his experience and composure, has imparted a much-needed solidity to a United side which looked wayward in the absence of able guidance on the pitch.

Behind the scenes, murmurs coming out of the club suggest the Serbian’s undergoing extensive training sessions with Michael Carrick focussed on one-touch, forward, and line-breaking passes. The coaching staff wanted to flush out Matic’s safety-first approach prevalent under Jose Mourinho.

Contract in place for Nemanja Matic

With his previous contract running down in the summer of 2020, Man United bosses triggered the option to extend Nemanja Matic’s Old Trafford stay by another 12 months. During this time, the dialogue continued between the player and the club over a new and improved contract.

And now, as per Gianluca Di Marzio, Man United have successfully agreed on contract terms with Nemanja Matic. It’s understood to expire in the summer of 2023. The clause of a further extension was not known until now.

One of the main reasons for Matic agreeing to extend his Old Trafford stay is the eagerness to be a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exciting project and being an important part of Manchester United’s future success.

Previously, when Nemanja Matic considered a United exit, Antonio Conte – who previously trained the player at Chelsea wanted the 31-year-old to be a part of Inter Milan as they seek to end Juventus’ Serie A hegemony.

Antonio Conte, who prefers Premier League players due to the amount of conditioning and training which takes place so that they can execute the intense style of the English league, has already signed Ashley Young and Romelu Lukaku permanently from Man United.

The Nerazzurri bosses are keen to sign Alexis Sanchez, on loan at Internazionale from United, on a permanent basis as well.
