Arsenal and David Luiz have agreed on a new deal that will keep him at the Emirates for another year.

The Gunners and error-prone defender, David Luiz, have concluded discussions over signing a new deal with the club. The agreement is said to keep the player at Arsenal till the year 2021, extending his stay for another season.

His time at the club has been running out and was supposed to expire by the end of June. The manager, Mikel Arteta, made it known to the club that they needed to do everything in their power to keep him at the Emirates for a longer period.

Why so keen to keep David Luiz?

More from Arsenal

Despite having a humiliating game on the reopening day of the Premier League, only lasting for about 25 minutes, and getting sent off in the Gunners’ embarrassing 3-0 loss to Man City, the North London side has increased his stay.

Why is Arsenal so keen to keep the Brazilian on-board? What is so important about a player who has a mistake in him almost game? How is it possible that the world sees Luiz differently to what the club and Arteta see him?

There have been many instances this season where David has either been caught napping, caused a penalty or made himself look like a fool. This term alone, the defender has received two reds and four yellows for his offences. This displays discipline is out the window and the other, he just isn’t good enough to play for a top-six club.

I cannot come up with an adequate answer to explain the club’s reasoning behind this news. The only thing I can guess is the club have minimal funds to bring in better names and offering the centre back a new deal is the best they can do for now.

The other, make him sign on and make sure they get some money (if they are looking to sell) to maybe help raise funds for a new defender to come in the summer transfer window. Either of these factors plus the fact Mikel Arteta loves him are the only reasons I can come up with.

What’re your thoughts on the matter?
