Premier League: Chelsea’s Potential Line-ups for the 2020/2021 Season
4-2-4 – Mad science formation for Frank
This is a formation Chelsea does not use or has rarely used under Frank Lampard. This is a formation where Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud would benefit from. The defense would stay the same as any other formation.
The midfield would feature only two. Kanté would be a must and the other starter would be either Jorginho or Mateo Kovacic. That would be a decision for Frank Lampard. If Lampard decided to use this formation, it would look like this;
Starting XI in a 4-2-4 formation: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Christensen, James, Kanté, Kovacic or Jorginho, Mount, Werner, Abraham, Ziyech.
The difference with this formation is the increase of strikers and a decrease of midfielders. An extra striker with Abraham and one less midfielder without either Jorginho or Kovacic.

The wingers would also play relatively higher to set up the strikers. With the midfielders, there would be an increase in responsibility for them. They would not play so high as they would stay a bit back to defend.
The 4-2-4 gives more depth for attackers and midfielders. Gilmour, Loftus-Cheek, and either Jorginho or Kovacic would be on the bench. So a direct effect of this would be a higher level of play for a longer period of time.
Frank Lampard has quite a few options for formations next season. Any formation he chooses will bring success to the club. But it will be Lampard’s choice to which will be the most efficient. He probably won’t be able to experiment with the squad as much, as he will need to find one that works consistently.
He must deliver the goods once they’ve added all their pieces to the Stamford Bridge puzzle. The fans would most likely want to see a formation where Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham play alongside each other. No matter which formation Lampard chooses, the fans will always support his choice.
