How was he the most expensive goalkeeper signing?

August 2018 saw Kepa and Chelsea put their name in the history books, as well as the Premier League. Two top-six clubs broke the record for most expensive goalkeepers signings in succession.

First Liverpool welcomed the service of Alisson Becker for £66.8 million (€72m) followed soon after by Kepa from Athletic Bilbao. At the time he was only 23-years-old, so the price paid for such an unproven stopper appeared silly.

During his two seasons at Chelsea, he has already caused problems on the pitch with the ex-Blues boss, Maurizio Sarri. The two had a public spat on the field afore a massive penalty shootout which Chelsea loss to Man City in the Carabao Cup final.

More from Premier League

In between this Kepa’s errors and just goalkeeping on a whole didn’t help his cause. Augments with Sarri left Lampard sleeping with his one eye open. He then continued to show flaws in his performances, but taking nothing away from him, he has the odd spectacular in him.

Nonetheless, the Spaniard lost his place to second-fiddle, Willy Caballero. For the whole of February, he was sidelined by Frank. His next appearance saw him start in the FA Cup victory over Liverpool.

A clean sheet and next round advance meant he kept his spot for the following game. Much to his delight, they handed a harder hiding out to the Blues of Merseyside. A 4-0 drubbing over Everton. And then the COVID-19 pandemic occurred.

During the forced break there have been ongoing speculations, Chelsea’s ready to offload the 25-year-old. It’s said to be hard to find any suitors, with Spain the location surfacing each time. No bites as of yet.

Lampard looks elsewhere now, with Nick Pope rumoured to be a target along with other class names.
