No Premier League return for Emre Can – Dortmund wants their German
Emre Can‘s big return to the Premier League appears to be off as Borussia Dortmund edges closer to agreeing on a deal with Juventus said to be £21 million.
Emre Can looks destined to snub Arsenal and Man United and rather join fourth-placed Borussia Dortmund during the winter window. The German midfield has been heavily linked with a move back to the Premier League, but now emerges as a top target for the Bundesliga outfit.
It is said the midfielder will take a big pay cut when joining the German side. The final fee as per reports is said to be in the £22m region.
"Juventus midfielder Emre Can is set to take a pay cut to join Borussia Dortmund in a £22million move. Can was the subject of interest from a host of clubs including Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. However, as reported by Football Italia, Can is on the verge of joining Dortmund, who managed to agree a fee with Juventus after their initial offer was rejected. Since the inclusion of Maurizio Sarri as the boss of the Old Lady, Emre has fallen down in the pecking order. He has only made eight appearances (281 minutes of Serie A football) this season under the Italian. Of those showings, Can’s longest period on the pitch was 72 minutes in a 1-1 draw to Lecca in the Serie A.
He has made no goal contribution, having no goals or assists for the season. His most recent outing came at the start of the year against Cagliari where they hammered them 4-0 at the Allianz Stadium.
There is no plan for the German with Sarri opting to go with Blaise Matuidi, Adrien Rabiot/Rodrigo Bentancu, and Miralem Pjanić in a midfield three. This is a formation Can use to excel in under Jurgen Klopp, so there is no doubting he could make the cut. However, this does showcase Sarri’s unabating nature to overlook Emre.
No sense moving to England if it’s not Liverpool
Can’s exit from Liverpool left a bit of a sore taste. Therefore, from the move not suiting the departing club and their fans, Can knew there was little love left for him on Merseyside. Due to this, the 26-year-old German international feels a move other than Liverpool in the EPL is off the cards.
The main reason for this, the clubs said to be hard in for the German are massive rivals to the Reds. Making the switch to Man United (who has been linked heavily with the German) or to Arsenal or Spurs, would be a major backwards step in his footballing career as well.
He left Anfield in search of Champions League football, silverware on a domestic level, and play with the best in the world. All of the aforementioned, are not at either Man United or Arsenal. Both clubs struggle to make up ground on their biggest priority this season and that is, ending the current campaign in a Champions League spot.
The best and only option is Dortmund
Dortmund has seen regular UCL football, as well as fought for Bundesliga honours in consecutive seasons (always coming close but yet still so far from taking Germany’s Top Flight title). Heading back home or somewhere close to home is sometimes the best options in life.
He can help BVB in the quest for Bundesliga and Champions League glory. Best move considering everything on the table.
