Simon Mignolet bids farewell to Liverpool and the Red army after quick exit
So sudden, yet, a long while coming. Simon Mignolet swiftly moves on from Liverpool and joins his boyhood club, Club Brugge.
So abrupt though so expected to see the Belgian stopper, Simon Mignolet takes leave from Anfield in an effort to gain regular football. A move to his hometown seemed like the best choice for the coffee shop owner.
A six-year spell comes to an end. A rocky road coupled with turbulent winds is the only way to describe the life of Simon in Liverpool. He started off in 2013 under Brendan Rodgers like a house on fire. He possessed so much promise coming from Sunderland as the Premier League Young Goalkeeper of the Year, the season prior to his top-six club move.

He got off to saving points for Rodgers as soon as he joined forces with him. Sadly, it all fell apart for both men during the latter years of Rodgers’ tenure, as he found it hard to show good form, consistently. If he was consistent at one point, it was because he was consistently making errors.
When Klopp arrived
When current manager Jurgen Klopp arrived at Anfield, the two entered a new journey that would see them come so close to Europa League glory, Carabao Cup triumph, and a fourth-place finish, all in one go. Sadly, all three tries ended in failure.
Simon’s first-choice was threatened with the arrival of German and Mainz’s youngster, Loris Karius, who was sent in to keep the Belgium number two on his toes, in between the sticks. He ended up losing his place to Karius and then eventually claimed it back, but then lost it again, only for him never to return as the first choice ever again.
This was due to the quality of the next man Klopp and Liverpool brought in to save valuable points for them. The Brazilian, Alisson Becker became a massive hit and has been unmoved since joining.
The Liverpool number one (Alisson) became the first goalkeeper in history to take the Golden Glove award in the Premier League, Champions League, and the Copa American. Not bad for your first stint as a Red. Mignolet sussed this situation out and probably realised he will not be seeing any first-team action anytime soon in a Liverpool shirt.
Nonetheless, he has been an outstanding professional in his time at Liverpool, taking all the criticism, sticking with the club during the bad times, furthermore standing behind every keeper that’s come in and has taken his spot.
The player to come in and replace Simon is the free agent and ex-West Ham goalkeeper, Adrian. Don’t get many like Simon anymore. Wishing him all the luck at his new home, Club Brugge.
