Site Expert Mahith Gamage and The Top Flight reported during the week the Manchester side held a strong interest in the outgoing defender, and that the Ajax man still welcomes a United move for the right money.

All that has changed after Sunday’s broadcast from Sky propose United will not complete a deal for the wonderkid.

Before this significant change in headlines, all of Man United were gearing up for celebrations in much-needed time. It was reported the club was about to steal the deal for de Ligt out from under Barcelona.

More from Premier League

With this surfacing, it was said the Catalan side were not prepared to compete with the English side’s luring bid, and are pulling out of the deal. United was ready to splash more cash Ajax’s way and at Matthijs.

The deal was sounding ridicule

The deal Ed Woodward was about to settle would see Matthijs de Ligt earn a huge £250k-per-week salary on a five-year deal. Ajax would then gain £85 million on the transfer, making him the most expensive centre-back signing in the world at the tender age of 19-years-old.

His countryman (who would have been his biggest rival if the transfer was completed) Virgil van Dijk, owns the title for the most expensive centre-back transfer in Premier League history at £75m.

United’s in need of a player of De Ligt’s talent. However, offering him £250k-per-week is a bit too generous. What happens when their needs to be a contract renewal for the defender? United would have to keep him happy and would most likely have to make him the highest paid player at Old Trafford for years to come.

With him not being Premier League established, it could take time for the youngster to adapt and flourish in a side that must find their own feet and identity.

United’s record-breaking transfers in the past have not done justice to the club. Players who were probably the best in the team and respected leagues came to fail in the Premiership after big money moves.
