World Cup: 3 Group Stage performers to improve EPL clubs

The Group Stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup may be well and truly over, but the transfer speculation only truly begins now.

It’s been a riveting World Cup, one of the best in recent history. A few big names have underperformed and been sent home early- think Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta, and Neuer. But likewise, there are a few unpolished gems who’ve used the World Cup stage to elevate themselves to new heights. Here are three who have duly impressed at this year’s edition, and could make a move to the EPL this summer.

1. Aleksandr Golovin (Russia)

22-year old Golovin has been one of the breakout stars of the group stage at this Russian World Cup. He possesses a technical ability that the host nation is not renowned for, which makes him a rare star in a team of hard workers and few real talismans. The central midfielder gave an assured performance in the hosts’ opening-game thrashing of Saudi Arabia, scoring and assisting in a 5-0 demolition. Since then, speculation has been rife of a move overseas from his current Russian club, CSKA Moscow. Chelsea, Man United and Juventus have been linked, with the latter believed to be in advanced talks with the player. However, that move has since stalled, with reports link Chelsea with a spectacular 27 million pound approach for the maestro.

2. Lucas Torreira (Uruguay)

Torreira has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, believed to be close- if not already completed. The diminutive defensive midfielder is a tackler in the mold of N’Golo Kante and has impressed this past season for Sampdoria. The 5”4′ Uruguayan has impressed for his country and has proved key in their run to the quarters. He has shown why he can cut it in the EPL during a strong World Cup showing. The player plays as an anchor at the base of midfield in a 4-4-2 diamond, and is formidable in this role. Torreira is strong on the ball and a capable screen for a defence and is someone Arsenal could do with. He has been linked with a 26 million pound move, with early reports claiming a medical is due imminently.

3. Aaron Mooy (Australia)

Australia impressed many with their above-expectation World Cup showing, and a key player for this was Aaron Mooy. The midfielder has an exceptional range of passing, and despite his lack of pace, is a Pirlo-esque deep-lying playmaker. He particularly impressed against France and Denmark, and produced a solid defensive and attacking contribution in both games. The 27-year-old had a great debut EPL season, with his Huddersfield side staying up as he produced goals and assists in key moments. He’s been linked with moves to Everton, Southampton and West Ham over the tournament, and even former club Manchester City. The latter is reportedly considering triggering his release clause, but don’t hold your breath.
