The Red Devils announced their singing of the 29 year-old Chilean, Alexis Sanchez. This deal with Arsenal, involved a transfer of Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the direction of the Emirates.

The Chilean forward seemed as though he was going to reunite with former manager, Pep Guardiola. Though, as that story developed it seemed as Pep’s side had pulled out of the race.

To some surprise, the Red Devils picked up the reigns and successfully pulled Sanchez to Old Trafford. He will be seen wearing the number seven jersey and, will be appearing alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Jose Mourinho commented:

"“Alexis is one of the best attacking players in the world and he will complete our very young and talented group of attacking players.“He will bring his ambition, drive and personality, qualities that make a Manchester United player and a player that makes the team stronger and the supporters proud of their club dimension and prestige.”"

It was a surprise to me to see Sanchez pick Mourinho over his old manager Pep, nonetheless, I feel he could have done well on either side of Manchester.

How can Manchester United line up with Alexis?

Naturally, Sanchez played on the left for Arsenal and was often seen cutting into the middle, acting as a supporting striker (which is what any natural-born winger should do). This would mean more room for Ashley Young to burst up the flank.

If it were up to me – I wouldn’t change the formation. I think Sanchez could add flare and spark missing on the left side. On the down side this could mean a possible exit for Martial – who will now be left in the dark. In my opinion, I thought Martial was good on that side but there’s no question – Mourinho will have to find another position for the Frenchman.

One way you could incorporate Martial is putting him on the right and moving Mata to the bench. I feel as though he fits the winger role more than Mata does.

Next: Southampton host Tottenham

Man United would benefit most with Mata playing through the middle as a centre-mid (like he has done in the past). With top three in sights, this transfer should be a warning sign for title-contending clubs.
