The season is upon us, and this means football fans from around Europe and the world are set to organize and compete for fantasy glory. Most teams have already been selected for tomorrow, but if you are playing the standard version of the official Fantasy Premier League (FPL) you can join at any point during the season. Here are some players to watch:

  1. Romelu Lukaku
  2. Wilfried Zaha
  3. Tom Heaton
  4. Harry Kane
  5. Cedric Soares

This preview barely scratches the surface of the immense and complex world of fantasy sports. There are multiple footballers from many clubs that are very intriguing in regards to price value and expected outcome, but these players top my list of potential targets in your team.

In fantasy, the ultimate goal is to find the best value players. This doesn’t necessarily mean the best players. This is closer to finding the best players at the best price. In most fantasy formats, managers begin the season with a theoretical $100 million budget to choose a starting 11 and four bench players.

The only player on this list I don’t currently have on my squad is Tom Heaton, the Burnley goalkeeper. We will get to him in a bit.

More from The Top Flight

Romelu Lukaku, the blockbuster Manchester United summer signing, is a must-own player this season. United have a promising season ahead, and Lukaku has racked up more than 20 goals in the last four Premier League seasons. It doesn’t seem likely that the Belgian will slow down this term, playing alongside the highest-quality teammates he ever has in his club career.

Wilfried Zaha is the best value pick in midfield, as the 24-year old was the 12th best FPL player at the position last season. Zaha is playing alongside some good forwards with Crystal Palace such as Christian Benteke, and signed a new contract this offseason.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton was the highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL last season with 149 points. The keeper outscored both Hugo Lloris of Tottenham and arguably the best keeper in the Premier League- Thibaut Courtois.

Harry Kane is the most expensive player in FPL this season, and for good reason. The back-to-back Golden Boot winner is set for another career season with the Spurs, and owners can be reasonably confident of a ridiculous 25-goal output from the Englishman.

The Saints are coming off an 8th place finish last campaign, and Cedric Soares is an emerging star. He is very cheap in FPL for a top-30 scorer last season, finishing 29th among defenders. He is entering the third year of a four-year contract, and is only looking to improve.

Good luck to all the FPL managers this season!
