The young midfielder has been linked with a move away from Everton for a few transfer windows. Now he is near enough guaranteed to leave.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman has made clear that Barkley’s place at the club is gone, and that him and the player have an understanding.

"Ross told me at the end of the season he wanted another challenge. His personal situation is really not so difficult. My priority is not Ross, with respect, it is his decision – BBC Sport"

This sets the scene for the Englishman’s future. He was originally linked with a move to Chelsea a couple of seasons ago but now North London seems his most likely destination. Currently, Tottenham Hotspur lead in the rumours.

A few Spurs players have a relationship with Barkley from international duty. Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Eric Dier have apparently impressed him with stories about manager Mauricio Pochettino. He is keen to make a move where he will be challenged.

Despite a constant cloud of uncertainty over his future recently, Barkley was one of Koeman’s regular starters. He made 36 appearances last season in the league and recorded five goals and eight assists.

The reason why his move hasn’t been finalised already is his price-tag. In the eyes of potential buyers, it is much too high and therefore has not been met.

Everton have valued Barkley at £50 million. This is extortionate in two ways. Firstly, Barkley lacks in a lot of skills and is not a well-rounded player.

Whilst he is good at making visionary passes and pushing play forward, he often loses concentration and can easily be robbed of possession. Such a high price seems excessive for a player who is not the full package.

Secondly, Barkley is in the last year of his contract and has rejected a new offer from Everton. This puts the club and player in a position of little power when negotiating with other clubs. For a player who is guaranteed to leave, with a contract almost over, Tottenham (or others) would not need to reach the asking price. They are in control of Barkley’s future, and they know it.

Of course, he could end up being sold for as much, but this is unlikely considering the pattern of the transfer window so far. Everton have made some great deals but are being ambitious with their valuation of the 23-year old.

Barkley’s future is not at Everton. Both player and manager have made that abundantly clear. Tottenham seem to be keen on bringing him to North London, but they are not alone in wanting him – they may have to compete both in price and persuasion to make the deal.
