Manchester United prepare last effort for Eric Dier
By Rayna Sidhu
Jose Mourinho is desperate to buy the defensive midfielder, with latest reports suggesting a bid of £60 million is being prepared as a final attempt to entice the player to Manchester.
Tottenham Hotspur have been quiet this transfer window. So far they have made no additions to their squad. They’ve only made headlines by selling Kyle Walker to Manchester City for a record-fee of £50 million. Now they may potentially lose another key player as Manchester United continue to try for Eric Dier.
Dier is a much-loved Spurs man. He plays either as a centre-back or defensive midfielder and seems to work well in both. His control of the ball and relationship with teammates has helped Mauricio Pochettino’s develop the squad.

He would be a great addition to Manchester United’s squad. Mourinho favours a more defensive approach to games and Dier is proven to work hard. He is also only 23 years old, which means he could be viewed as more of an investment – he is young enough to be moulded by the new manager.
However, the Englishman only signed a new five-year contract with Tottenham last September, which sees him earning £70,000 a week. In this sense, his current club should have no issues in keeping him unless Manchester United make an offer they cannot refuse.
This seems to be Mourinho’s latest tactic to secure Dier. The bid of £60 million is being viewed as his last effort before giving up and turning his full attention to another player of that position, such as Nemanja Matic of Chelsea. It is debatable whether Tottenham would sell. £60 million is a lot of money to gain but Dier is one of Pochettino’s most trusted players. Further, Eric Dier’s eagerness to make the move to the Manchester club is apparently growing, which may make it harder for Spurs to keep hold of him.

If Eric Dier does leave, it could cause problems for Tottenham. To have sold two big players to title rivals without any replacements doesn’t look good. It will be interesting to see just how persuasive United’s money can be.
