As the transfer window gets well underway, reports have emerged that Everton have not ruled out the possibility of buying Wayne Rooney or Olivier Giroud this summer.

The Toffees have been busy already with new buys Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez, Henry Onyekuru and most recently, Michael Keane. But it seems they’re not ready to stop there. Sky Sports today reported that Everton might also be interested in Wayne Rooney or Olivier Giroud.

It would be a smart signing. Everton are set to lose their best player in Romelu Lukaku later this summer as he heads back to Chelsea. Although they’ve already invested in a replacement, Onyekuru may need time to settle into the Premier League.

Having a back up forward in Rooney or Giroud would be useful. Not only that, rotation can be important to keep a squad fit. Koeman may be considering this.

More from The Top Flight

Neither Rooney nor Giroud are very valuable to their own clubs anymore. They scored 17 goals between them in the league last year, and were both more trusted as substitutes than regulars. As Manchester United and Arsenal focus on bringing in faster and younger players, both men have found little purpose recently.

However, Everton will know not to expect much, and it would be wise to have options. A trusted striker on the bench can make all of the difference in a tight game, and Koeman is tactically knowledgeable enough to know how best to utilise him.

Of course, much of these talks will rely on when Lukaku leaves the club. As Arsenal edge closer to signing Lacazette, Lyon have been looking at a replacement. They have one in Bertrand Traore, but like Everton, are also interested in a back up. Giroud has been named as one of the possibilities.

If Everton are waiting for Lukaku money before making their move, they may have to do so fast. Transfers can either be incredibly drawn out or completed in the blink of an eye. Everton’s star striker has been linked with Chelsea for months, and although he’s announced that he knows where his future is, a concrete agreement is yet to be forged.

There are a lot of talks but very little action between these clubs at the moment, which may change soon. Everton are clearly growing ready to seriously compete next season. Adding depth to the squad is always worthwhile. The Toffees are showing no signs of slowing and still have plenty of time to develop their squad even more.
