Liverpool announce signing of Mohamed Salah for club-record fee
By Rayna Sidhu
The winger has benefited from club experience at Chelsea, Fiorentina and Roma and will now join Jurgen Klopp’s men as they fight for the league and beyond.
Chelsea bought Mohamed Salah from Basel in 2013, where he made a total of 13 league appearances before Jose Mourinho sent him on loan. Although not given much of a chance to make an impact, he showed potential. The loan spell and eventual sale to Roma was the best thing for him at the time. Now, he is ready to return to the Premier League.
It is worth noting that Chelsea have added to their transfer funds from Liverpool’s transfer payment. The Blues included a sell-on clause – if Roma made a profit from selling the Egyptian, they would receive ten percent of the fee. Clever business.

Liverpool spent a reported £36.9 million on him, which is a record fee for the club. He is worth it, though. In the increasingly inflated transfer market, a good player under £40 million is proving harder to come by.
Salah has impressed in Serie A and earned his new price tag. He had been given much more trust, shown through his 65 appearances for Roma, and managed to score 29 goals.
He could be exactly what Liverpool need to spur Klopp’s ambitions. The player himself has spoken of the effect the manager had on his decision:
"Everyone can see the coach gives everything. I hope to see that together we can give everything to win something for the club, for the supporters and for us. – Liverpool"
There is an infectious feel to Klopp – he is straight talking and spirited. It is no wonder that players are also attracted to that atmosphere. Having a strong leader is so important, and Liverpool have that in him.
Not only that, Salah will fit in well to this Liverpool team. He has some Premier League experience, which can only be an asset. He will also likely link up well with the likes of Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho. Salah is comfortable playing on either wing and has dabbled in the ‘false nine’ position too.
This flexibility will allow tactics and fellow players to develop in order to surprise opponents. An attack is most dangerous when it’s fast and unpredictable. If Liverpool can master that, they will prove tricky to stop.
Next: Pre-season fixtures to look out for this summer
Liverpool have done a fantastic job in securing a solid signing so early into the summer. Salah will now have the chance to get to know his teammates and the training regimes before the Premier League starts. After a disappointing period in England previously, he may now be a player to watch.
