After a second great season in the Premier League, Chelsea’s N’golo Kante sees his efforts rewarded yet again with the Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year award.

N’golo Kante has been recognised for his defensive talents once again, and it could not come at a better time for the midfielder. This adds to his Players’ Player of the Year Award given last month and will only add to his confidence as Chelsea steam ahead to claim the Premier League title and win the FA Cup.

Kante’s impact was somewhat understated during his time at Leicester as he was part of the history-making side to win the Premier League title. His talent was undeniable, but his efforts were grouped with those of his teammates. When Chelsea bought him for 30 million last summer, there were questions over his integrity and whether his skills would be transferrable to such a demanding club.

Since his transfer to Chelsea, however, he has heard nothing but praise. It has been made abundantly clear why he was so important to Leicester.

More from The Top Flight

The Frenchman has been pivotal in steadying Chelsea’s defensive concerns from last season, and has helped manager Antonio Conte settle into the 3-4-3 formation that he favours. Conte clearly trusts him, too – Kante has made 33 appearances in the Premier League this season. He has slotted into a competitive Chelsea squad with ease.

His teamwork, namely with defensive partner Nemanja Matic, has helped the team control the midfield throughout the season. There has been some competition for Matic’s place, with Cesc Fabregas also working for that position. Kante has worked well with both.

His individual efforts are even stronger. So far this season, Kante has averaged 3.4 tackles a game and 2.5 interceptions. His clinical style has kept Chelsea steady in their race for the title. He is also reliable in his attacking instincts, and often pushes up the attacking play, linking with Eden Hazard and Pedro particularly well.

There is no doubt that N’golo Kante deserves the awards he has received so far. His role within this current Chelsea side is clear and his work ethic makes his efforts essential.

For this award, just as with the Players’ Player of the Year Award, Hazard was runner-up to Kante. Hazard has arguably had one of his best seasons yet this year. It is a true nod to Kante’s talents to have beaten his talented teammate twice for such prestigious awards. It is rare that a defensive player is recognised so frequently in such competitions.

As Chelsea storm forwards to claim the League title and the FA Cup, Kante will be more important than ever. He is a true asset to Chelsea and a great player to watch in the Premier League.
