Arsene Wenger has decided that he would like to sign a new deal to stay on as Arsenal manager beyond this season.

Arsene Wenger just isn’t getting the message. Or he just isn’t listening, at least. Despite strong calls from many Arsenal fans to step down in the summer, the Frenchman has decided that he wants to sign a new deal to stay on at the club, according to the Mirror.

No final decision has been made as yet, however. Wenger still has to meet with the board to discuss the situation, with the board insisting the decision on Wenger’s future should be a mutual one.

The futures of star players Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil could also have an impact on Wenger’s future. Both players will have less than a year remaining on their contract if they stay beyond the summer and don’t sign a new deal.

New deals are not looking likely as things stand, and so, both players’ futures are currently up in the air. If both were to leave, alongside Wenger, it would truly be a new era and a new chapter for the club next season.

The summer seems to be the right time for Wenger to leave his position as manager. The team’s form is stuttering once again this season, and the Gunners now look in severe danger of not even qualifying for the Champions League.

More from The Top Flight

A prominent complaint against Wenger for years has been that he always finishes in the top four, but never really threatens to challenge beyond that. Now Wenger might not even manage that. And even if he does, it’s still time to bow out.

Arsenal need a new start and a new era. It might be better than the current team, it might be worse. But it’s time for Arsenal to take a bold step in a new direction. For far too long, the team have had the same problems year after year unsolved.

Wenger has already received too much time to show he can fix the issues. It’s been over a decade since the Gunners last won the Premier League title. They’re not getting any closer, either, that’s the problem. They’re getting further away.

It’s time for the Arsenal board to show some ambition and leadership. Stand up to Wenger and in-form him the club is going to head in a new direction. There is no reason for Wenger to receive a new contract. None.

The board could not possibly justify such a move, given the last decade, and now given this season. Now is the time for the 67-year-old to finally make way for a new Gunners boss. It’s time for Arsenal to transition away from the Wenger era.

Even if Arsene Wenger himself believes, and wants, otherwise.
