Manchester United lining up swoop to sign Eric Dier from Tottenham
Manchester United are eyeing up a £35 million move for Tottenham defender Eric Dier in the summer.
Manchester United want to sign Tottenham Hotpsur defender Eric Dier in the summer, according to The Sun. United boss Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of the player and is keen to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford.
United were even interested in signing Dier back in January. But Spurs had zero interest in even hearing any offers for any of their key players, and would have demanded at least £45 million to even begin talks.
United will have a transfer kitty in excess of £200 million in the summer, however, and will return for Dier then. Tottenham are determined not to sell, however, with Mauricio Pochettino seeing the 23-year-old as key to Spurs’ future.
Although, a United bid of around £35 million for the player would test that determination. Mourinho also wants to bring Antoine Griezmann to United, and is also looking for a center-back, full-back and midfielder.

Mourinho has chopped and changed his center-backs this season, with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling all having time in the starting XI. If Mourinho is unconvinced by his current options, then Dier could be the player to come in and solve that area of the team.

The Spurs man can play central midfield, though, too. Mourinho has Paul Pogba in his midfield at present, usually playing alongside Ander Herrera. Whilst Michael Carrick is out of contract in the summer, so Dier could be a fresh addition to United’s midfield ranks.
It would be interesting to see where Mourinho potentially would see Dier playing in a Manchester United team. Dier actually lost his midfield place earlier in the season, due to the fantastic form of Tottenham summer signing Victor Wanyama.
That, combined with mass injuries in defense, has seen Dier play more as a defender this year than last. Dier is versatile, though, and can cover numerous positions for his team. That’s an added bonus of having an Eric Dier in your squad.
At £35 million, Mourinho clearly sees Dier as a potentially key player in United’s team. The problem with that is that Tottenham feel the same way. Dier also seems extremely happy and settled at White Hart Lane.

Money does usually talk, though. So if Mourinho really is intent on signing Dier, then United’s money is going to have to talk loud. £35 million seems like a lot of money, although in today’s market maybe it isn’t.
In order to convince an unwilling Spurs to sell, maybe Dier will cost even more.
